My Son and Daughter have brought me over from the dark side. I won't drink anything but craft beer. I'll drink Corona in a pinch. I get a kick out of seeing these tough guys with beer guts, strap T-shirts, their ball caps on backwards drinking Coors or Miller Light.

“In this photo from 1958-59, we’re looking north up Hill Street from 7th street in downtown Los Angeles toward Pershing Square. The vertical “SANTA FE” sign is for the Santa Fe Southern Railway and that white building in the distance is the Title Guarantee Building, which is now a loft apartment building. And get a load of those gold banners! It’d be hard to walk past and not know that Bullock’s were holding their August Clearance!”

Bullock’s is/was a top brand name for big clothing stores + accessories. They had stores all over So Cal and surrounding areas. In Los Angeles, there were branches of the Bullock’s name and stores. The most famous is the specialty store called Bullock’s Wilshire. That was the epitome of all named stores from anywhere in this line of department stores. Outdoor malls, attached indoor mall “anchors,” and sometimes, stand alone buildings to enlarge the brand name as per location.

    Hello,

It is definitely different from 65-66 years ago. Downtown Los Angeles has changed from tall buildings, interesting architecture and stores, to hi-rise buildings for corporate offices, apartment buildings and condo developments. And yet, still some of the old architecture still remains. The street running up to the tall unique white building (Title Guarantee Building apartments) has changed and the main street Hill Street is now considered the Jewelry Center of the whole area.

Driving down either street in recent times as well as 60 years ago is a contrast in development and styles. The streets used to have some sunshine, but the tall buildings now shade most of the streets. As other major cities have their own busy city centers for all sorts of products, this became the center of business of Jewelry and purchasing/trading/whatever else goes on behind gated doors...

For young kids back in the late 50s, we were always impressed with the taller buildings in downtown Los Angeles. But, going down Hill Street, eventually leads us to our Number 1 restaurant in all of Los Angeles at the time… Phillippe’s famous French Dip Sandwich corner, near Olivera Street and the Union Station.
Our old rumbling hot rods late at night had a distinct sound going down those fairly empty streets, despite being in the middle of a bustling downtown section of Los Angeles.

    Note:

As far as the locations of the old Bullock’s stores were, they have been changed to other big name store groups, as Bullocks faded into obscurity. Now, most stores are a part of the large Macy’s line of big box department stores. Furniture to clothes to kitchen ware is the specialty. Daytime driving is still a bustling area. But, at night, it is not the most welcoming area to be in... a ghost town of sorts with whatever can happen at any hour... YRMV
