Default Old photos at Austin Speed-O-Rama

These are some old photos of my Father Raymond Johnson and the cars he raced over the years. Most of these are from the Fifties and sixties at the Austin Speed-O-Rome race track. If any of you have photos from the Speed-O-Rama post them. I'd love to see them.

Cool photos Ray, looks like your dad was a real contender out there. The Speed-O-Rama is still there, in all its abandoned and glory. The East First Auto Supply building is still in it's same location on E. 1st (now known as Cesar Chavez St.), but has been abandoned and is now being converted to what looks like a hipster clothing store.

Thanks, He was track champ many times. Too bad someone doesn't fix the old track up. It's a real part of Austin's history.

Lance, look at the intersection of 183/FM812, just south of the airport for the Speed-o-Rama.

It's located south of Austin on US Hwy 183, Southeast of Austin-Bergstrom Int'l Airport.
(Formerly Bergstrom AFB).

Yes, I knew Waldo Harper. My Mother may have some more photos of those days. I'll check with her and post them if she does. And wasn't there a Jimmy Finger as well?
Do you know Luther New (South Side Wrecker)? My father loved him like a brother.

sure brings back memories. I was Lugnut the track clown when it was Longhorn Speedway from 86 till it closed in I believe 98 or 99. Had a lot of fun and saw a lot of good racing. Lot of old timers are still around the area. Was sad to see it close down.
