Technical How do you rivet brake shoe linings on?

Now I know what to check for. Makes perfect sense now that it's explained to me. Thanks for all the info, sometimes I don't know what I'd do without this place.

Whats wrong with this picture. All us old guys that used to rearch brake shoes in the corner of an old dirty shop are still here, yet if a test has revealed more 3% asbestos matter is found in a vinyl floor or attic insulation during a home remodel the gov has to have HASMAT, fire, police, OSHA, FEMA, FBI, CIA, Secret Service, Special Ops, Rat Patrol, workers in white helmeted suits and the Marines in helicopters overhead corden off a 16 block area because of the possibility of dangerous levels of highly toxic asbestos fibers in the air. Shouldn't we have all died violent deaths from Malignant Mesothelioma by now.... rant!

Truck shops still reline brake shoes. If you do it yourself wear an approved respirator so you dont have to listen to me rant again.

Squablow the machine i ran was a contstant rotating drum that had slots in it to allow the shoes to ride on its surface. there was a spring loaded drum that when the shoes rotated on the slotted drum that applied pressure to the shoes. when the arc was correct they just fell out into a drum. sometimes they went around one time and others 3 or 4. dirty and boring but paid the mortgage. at least you were sitting down and someone else brought you the shoes. nice perk was all my vehicles had new brakes.

I use clecos to hold it, hammer and dimpled punch to set rivets. Just have to get the feel of it, too much hammer and it'll crack the fiber.

I also have one of those manual ones as well as another I was told was a de-riviter. This electric one I'm keeping and will get running "one of these days".

I bought this from a guy at the local Tractor swap meet last spring for $40.00,.. It has a little inverted drill press deal to drill out the old rivets, the drum sander, and the press,... he put the lamp cord on it, but gave me the original one with it.

I also found a NOS set of 37-41 Ford king pins there in the original box for $7.00

Yep, had one in the high school auto shop with no way to catch the dust so I cut the plug off the cord and sat the thing in the back store room.

Those things most likely contributed to a lot of lung cancer in older mechanics.

They did a great job of fitting the shoes to the drums though.

The unit that Harm's Way picked up at the swap meet is an exact duplicate of the one we had in the high school auto shop.

I've had luck using local big truck brake shops to rivet them on and re-arc them two different Packards of ours.One was in Jax.,Fla.where my Dad lives and the other in Atlanta,Ga.where I live. In Fla,I got them back in about three hours and in Atl. the next day and was only about $40.00 both times.Good luck.

Outlawed in 1976 in most places. I get a free chest cat scan every year due to having operated one for a few years. Setting of the rivets is done by a special punch, think it was called a "star set".

Gee that must be why I can't sleep at night !! Got a restored one sitting in my living room that gets pulled out to the shop for use every once in a while. The use of one is necessary to have good shoe contact in OS drums so you have good brakes right from the start. Other wise you wait until normal wear makes the shoe fit correctly.
As far as shoe fit goes as I was taught you want the lining to contact in the center with just a bit of clearance on the last 1/2 to 1" on each end of the lining.
In the old days ,pre 80s, we stocked shoes lined in standard and OS. The OS had lining .030 thicker than the Std. ,which was right for a .060 drum. Or could be ground to suit the drum size in question.
I still turn drums and arc shoes on occasion for people here in Phoenix along with the odd lathe and mill work. Got to keep my self entertained in my old age!

Bob: Roll set for brake lining, star set is used on clutch facings.

I spent most of the 60s-70s early 80s in HD truck parts houses with machine shops that arced shoes and turned drums. When they blew out chips from the drums while turning the brake dust would be so thick you could hardly see. Last shop I worked at had a giant power wash cabinet that would take a full mounted set of duels ,washed out all the dust ,grease etc. befor turning.
