Hot Rods Adam's Model A Tudor AV8 Build Thread!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Adam M., Jan 28, 2011.

  1. I'm finally going to start a build thread and show some history of how I found some parts, to putting everything together. This is my first build from the ground up. I've built the car many times in my head, but now I'm going to make it reality.

I figure everyone loves pictures, so I'll try to post lots. I also think by doing this, it will push me to work more on the car so I can show some progress.

    This is the plan:
-1930 Model A Tudor sedan, on a Model A frame, fenderless, highboy.
    -1946 69A Flathead V8
    -3 spd trans
    -1941 Merc spindles, split wishbone
-1946 Ford coupe brakes on all 4 corners
    -banjo rear axle closed driveline
    -short '46 rear radius rods
    -16"x4" early Ford solid wheels
-5.50 front, 7.50 rear Firestone deluxe champion tires
    -'32 original grille and shell
    -F1 steering box
    -F1 crossmember and pedels
-Model A axle Dropped for a total of 4" drop
    -'46 Lincoln twelve steering wheel
    -Walker rad
    -Edmunds 2 carb intake
    -Stromberg 97's
    -Edmunds heads
    -etc etc

This sounds like a common type build on here, but not many cars are built like that around here, and its my plan right now. The original plan was a flathead, but as you will see, it changed....THEN I CAME TO MY SENSES AND A FLATHEAD IS GOING IN THE CAR!

    Here is my "Barn Find"

    Digging it out

    There it is

It was headed down a bad road. The frame was messed up, body had some "odd" work done.

    I can fix it!

  2. So the chassis was not exactly what I wanted so I picked up this '28 that had a nice chassis, and I swiched the bodies

Then I set some items out on the driveway that I didn't need and Sold the "Model kit"!

    After
    [IMG]

Now its starting to look like something

Looks like a great start and those build plans make me think this is gonna be a great car when its done.

    Nice work on the cowel,

    I'll be watching this one,

    Adam

  6. I picked up this 1941 Merc carcass that supplied quite a few parts.

I wanted to run the flathead, but then.....(DON'T WORRY I SWITCHED BACK!)

I bought my first GM product. Its a 1959 Chev Impala that was in storage and the building fell ontop of it.

It was a 45,000 Mile 283 with a factory posi rear. I parted the car out and ended up with this

Now I need to build another car after this one to get my flathead fix!

(I ended up selling the rear axle and the 283...more money for the AV8!)

  7. So things are on track. Then a guy calls and asked if I wanted to sell the chassis. I said nope. Then he says he's selling some shop equipment due to illness and I should come have a look. Well before I know it, my frame is on the trailer.....

And I bring this stuff home!

    -Sandblaster and dust collector
    -bead roller
    -shrinker/strecher
    -brake
    -some benders, other rollers etc....
I think I did alright. I was ahead and behind at the sametime!

  8. So to move my body around for now, my friend gave me a rough frame and Jeff had this old trailer axle, so I made a dolly

It was looking like something....Well then I figured I might as well see how these parts are going to fit and give me a boost

So I rolled it in the garage, removed the temp axle

  9. I figured I'd see how the engine fits. I picked up a hurst motor plate, but I think I'm going to make my own mounts.

I know the engine will go back some later, but I needed an idea
    [IMG]

    I cut this off

    Here is a rough idea

Looks like you're off to a great start....

  11. I sat some parts together
    [IMG]

This one I had a banjo rear sitting there and no hood sides. My wife likes the hood so it will likely have one at least 50% of the time!

I sat this van seat in and tossed a blanket on it and it looks and feels alright. I might not use the seat, but if I do, it will get upholstered

  12. This is the Merc front end blown appart.

I cut up the Merc wishbone and ended up with this:
    original spring mount
    [IMG]

    I cut it off
    [IMG]

Then made them look alittle nicer

  13. My Walker rad just came in. I need to pick up the nice original frame I found then I can really get started. I'm going to mount the rad, set the engine with the right fan clearance, then I can put the body on and modify the firewall to get the right distance so the hood fits properly. Etc Etc.

    That's the plan! Enjoy!

  14. Cool project and good pics and explanations. I look forward to seeing it progress!

Your Tudor is looking great Adam, that body looks very solid. You will have that on the road in no time.

Looks good so far. I dig A sedans with early SBC's, so you're doing great in my book.

  27. Well there hasn't been alot happening on the car but there has been some. I've gone back to my original plan to run a banjo rear axle. I hope I don't regret it....

Fresh from the shed! That is alittle snow on it not Bonneville Salt!

Here is how I measure the width:

I turn the lug nuts around, then bolt two straight pieces on, then measure inside to inside. It can also be done while still in the vehicle.

59-1/2" drum face to drum face. That will work!

    Pulled the drums

Found some nasty brakes. The car was last plated in '62!

I have been doing some reading on these axles, and I read that some '39 and 1940 Mercs had a drive shaft and pinion that were one piece. Well looks like this 1941 Merc had one of those......

Can't win'em all. I'm going to run an open drive line, so we'll see. I have not decided how I'm going to attack this yet.
