Has anyone here on the HAMB mated the 28-29 rpu cab to a 30-31 back cab panel? The 30-31 is taller and wider then the 28-29, but the body curve matches. The beltline is wrong. The way I am doing it gives more interior room. A little real help would be good. If you don't like it , let me have it. I don't care.:) Was just thinking, since I started this I may as well turn it into my build thread. I'll had stuff as I go, which will be v e r y slow. I have no real talent so if nothing else watch the carnage!

BTTT. By the way, thank you wheelkid!

  3. You are real close, tweak the upper beltline and the lower bead a bit and it will work! Cool idea.

Great idea. I never have liked the back of the 28-29 all that much, too flat/squarish. This looks like a good fix.

Why not use the back of a same year sedan and cut the top off and add the flat edge to it. Maybe someone would trade. Just a thought.

Yup...one of my favorite RPU's of all time. Royce Glader's '29 built by Pinkees. They used '30/'31 doors too though.

  9. That's my favorite also!

  10. That rpu came to my mind too....only thing is.... that one has a ridiculous amount of time into it....insane amount of custom work to make everything flow so nicely.

  11. I think that it's gonna look too long back there if you put the 30 cab back right at the back of the original 29 cab back.

Maybe cut the 29 cab back halfway between the doorpost and the back panel, then blend the 30 cab back on there....it'll keep it looking more proportionate.

I guess the other option would be doing it the way you have it pictured...but stretching the doors to help with proportions.

I think the latter would be alot more complicated though.

Good luck, I love the idea.

That Pinkee's rpu is so cool, but waaay past my ability. With mine sitting on top of the frame and no bed I think the larger cab will be OK. Streching the doors is a great idea, but I am not that skilled.I do plan on welding the seam between the old and new panel.

Nice concept. I'm more partial to the flat back for the 28-29, but its no fun if you can't fit in it.

Before you do too much welding, stand back and look at your side profile; maybe even sit down and get eye level with the upper edge behind the door. What I think I'm seeing is sort of a hump or mis-match in the body height.

Could you maybe cut off the body bead at the bottom of the curved back panel, and then section the panel by the amount of the mis-match. Then weld the body bead back on, which seems like it would be easier than forming a new one. Making the back and side panels the same height should give this cab a nicer side profile. Now, the upper body body lines or reveals should line up, also. If you could find a way to transition from the squarish profile of the 28-29 side to the rounded profile of the 30-31 back panel, you'ld really have something going on.

Sure it'll take more time, but this attention to detail is what separates us from the rat rodders. ;)

Think that's a great idea...have a 23 T project with a narrowed 29 cowl for the same reasons. (Unfortunatly it's on the back burner for now...)

Kinky6, that is the plan. Wondering if it would be easier/less noticable to cut and weld it at the bottom of the top beltline or through the flat part?

I think through the flat part, maybe towards the bottom. Seems like it would be easier to metal finish the welds that way, instead of having to deal w/ the crease at the beltline.

Sounds like you're all over this; should turn out nice. Is this getting a bed, or is it a two seat modified style?

I know I have been told to not weld it this way ........then to not smooth it that way...... but it is really getting smooth.

Next fun part. I need some advice on how to match these moulding lines. Was thinking of welding some thick welding rod to the bottem of the RPU panel to match the new back panel. Any ideas on blending the28-29 to the 30-31 beltline ???[IMG]
