Hey there,
i thought i'd start a thread of my 1950 ford club coupe and introduce myself as i have been reading on the hamb for a long time but never done a thread. so HELLO i'm Derek from Castlemaine Australia. thanks to everyone out there for putting up usefull info and pics, and bassically giving me a good reason tosit on my computer and read interesting stuff. i have read alot of thread on shoebox ford and thought i'd let you guys see mine. i recently sold my Xp Falcon station wagon and had been looking at 49-50 fords for couple years so when i found mine i had the money burning a whole in my pocket and jumped on it, found it on ebay america, it was located in texas being sold by a guy that has a used car bussiness specialising in classic and muscle cars. seemed like a decent car for the price so i did the "buy it now', worry about it later button. i'l keep this short, did all the necessary paper work and emails and stuff and 2 and a half months later i went up to melbourne to pick it up, around an hour and a bit drive from where i live, me and my buddy mitch went there in my vc valiant to pick it up and after a long day of havin a little issue with customs i jumped in it started it up and drove it home on an unregistered vehicle permit, had the vc's boot full of tools, water, oil, brake fluid. all the stuff so that if something happened we could get it home, but i am happy to say i cruised it home all the way without missing a beat, was pretty happy with that. the only downside was that somewhere between leaving texas and arriving in melbourne the door trims, 4 new ones and 2 rust repair panels for the front floor pans were gone and it copped some nice dents and scratches to the roof as well as a lot of oil leaked on the roof and down the rear window. but i can live with that as i am doing an insurance claim on it. anyway, i want to start this thread to show the car its progress and the good times had working on it, drinking beer and eating food. so i plan on putting a heap of pics and stuff and any feed back or ideas are welcome, my xp wagon was a mild custom paint type thing, lowered white walls, all that stuff a nice cruiser, but i'd like to do this a mild to full custom, lowered aventually airbag set up, shaved door handles, nosed and decked bonnet, smoothed boot lid, keep the trim down the side cause i think that looks good, roof chop, dressed up flatty, firestone bias plies with spider caps or caddy hub caps. and satin green metalic paitn one day, but for now registered and lowered and cruise it for a bit, i picked the car up around 3 weeks ago and have had a bit of a play around and will post pics, i am in the eldorados of south muckleford car club with me and 10 other guys all interested in hotrods, customs and classic cars up to the 1960's. were a good bunch of guys that have club meets once a fortnight at each others sheds, bassically meet up have some beer, pizza, spit roasts whatever and talk shit, work on each other cars, and have a laugh, really good stuff, its a great club as were all mates and have the same interest and all willing to get in there and help eachother out, all have good car car knowledge. some professional tradesman and others with a good knowledge and do it yourself attitudes. anyway here is my car let me know what you think and i hope its a good thread to look at and read, cheers Des |

after a beer and a few pics from a long day i took it in the shed and waisted no time removing the sunvisor and making myself a little more happy with its appearance. the chicken man stood back and said "man that looks a shit load better already" jumped on the harley and went home.
he is currently in the process of importing his 53 olds coupe from north carolina, looks like it'll be a cool car when it arrives on our shores. hopefully he doesnt receive any damage to his big ass car. a good look over the car was then had by me straight away to see how much work i had before i it could be road worthy for victorian roads and registration. after a quick once over without jacking it up to checkout brakes and suspension she looked like a good thing, there was an obvious exhaust leak from the passenger side manifold which is an easy fix and a few tail light issues due to 60 year old cloth covered wiring. blowing fuses straight away, no big deal. and a leakey rear main seal. not the best but it has to be done. the body is pretty damn good, minimal rust in the front floor pans and a few little wholes in the sills, and not a thing in the boot area, pretty happy with that, no other rust to speak of as yet and from the look of how old and shitty the paint is i cant see an major filler issues or rust hidden as i think by now it would have possibly started to creep out, but you never know untill you start stripping it to find all the hidden surprises, all in all pretty happy with what i have got without actually going to the states and looking at it in person. i should mention this car cost $8250 and the aus dollar is stronger than the us dollar at the moment so it was a little less than that in aus dollars. i think it was a good price thats why i jumped on it and bought it after it had been on ebay for around 4 hours. |

we had a club meet the next night and decided to have a roast out of our custom made spit roast that me, Ahron and chicken made out of a carton united breweries keg that i aquired (stole form outside the pub one night), it runs, repo model a hinges, ford 170ci rods and slugs ford the legs, a cut down camshaft for a handle and a spit kit from the hardware store, we use heat beads to cook with, ebo brought a fresh massive leg of lamb that im quite sure he chewed it off with it teeth that afternoon before that club meet (he's a farmer by the way).
a few potatoes and home made salsa by the chicken man and corn chips, a nice amount of beer saw the night out, anyway i jacked it up and started having a look over it and was surprised to find near brand new brake shoes all round and good wheel cylinders and new shocks in the rear, a new exhaust which sounds nice, and new tierod ends, a little rust repair required in the floor and an idler arm kit, and of course the rear main seal, pretty damn good driver. a quick brake adjustment the wheels went back on, the tyres are also brand new coker classic radials, but they will be going for some bias ply firstones soon. have too........... we also decided we may aswell drop the front bar to give it that fat spinner look to, it amazing how much an inch and a bit lowerin of that bar can make the whole front look better, |

ok so, i had the easter long weekend was reading alot of hamb and talking to a few guys about changing the rear main seal and thought theres no time like the present, so out comes the flatty,
i spent a bit of time getting everything ready to come out, was just going to use my block and tackle but chicken thought he'd rock up with the engine crane, he's a good egg, no pun intended ha ha. so me and chicken started to get it out and tex rocked up to give us a hand. in the mean time i had the rope seals soaking in oil all afternoon, we ripped it out and flipped it over onto a tyre and got the sump off and crank out, too easy when you have a shithouse exhaust pipe that crosses the front of the block, we were calling it the wheel barrow cause you can pretty much pick it up and move it around with the exhaust like a wheel barrow. a good bit of help is great and a few beers and a bbq doesnt hurt. but we got it replaced and everything torqued up, i should mention that all the bearings were in really good nick and could still see hone marks in all the bores which is a good indication of a rebuild not to far back, bassically it looked like a good flatty, not 60 years old and tired. so it all went back together and a little prep work and paint, thanks for coming, we were out talking shit and stuffin around till near 2am. good club, good blokes always willing to give a hand. the nest day i threw it back in, cleaned a few bits uo and got here singin like a bird again. good little job. |

so me flatty is back in again, out one afternoon back in the next, thats what i wanted, i removed the front ford badge cause i had some time to kill the other arvo and welded it up, will require more work but its done, and started locating my wiring issues, i now know why shoebox owners get a new wiring loom kit, cause the old cloth shit is fairly stuffed and rubs through on every chance it gets, but i eventually found it in the boot area, to to wire with no insulation wraped around each other, might explain the now tail lights and blowing fuses as soon as i turn the lights on, re-taped them seperately and then together fixed the problme but i think i will start re-wiring parts with all new stuff and just work though the car.
but i have all the light and interior dash light and stuff working, one step closer to roady, and now i can drive it at night. oh and i forgot to put this pic of tex up, just cause i love it, beer on top of the crank will cleaning it all up to put back in with no shit on it. |

oops, i got carried away, when i got the car i was like oh the paints shitty, ill just drive it round like this for a while, i may have been curious to see what it would be like if i wet rubbed and buffed a little section, next thing you know i did the whole fender, only to find this cool metallic blue colour just beneath the surface, the more i rub and watch the top blue come off to reveal the nice blue colour underneath i keep going, "why the f#*k would someone paint over good cool paint with shit"
so its patchy and stuff, but now half the car is shiny and has a cool look to it. sometimes, all you have to do is mention food and beer and mates rock up outta nowhere to give you a hand rubbing, awesome, i had 4 blokes on the paper and just following each other around, going through the grades. if i spent the time i could possibly get all the top blue off and have the metallic kinda like an old free paint job ha ha, but it kinda like the look of it the way it is, and when its low and cruising around i wont care. so its by no means anything special but i feel its a major improvement to the look of the shoebox. some would say its shit, but f#*k em, its my car and i can make it look as shit as i want lol. its only until one day i strip it anyway, i also took all the front grill pieces out and polished them as nice as i could get them to come up. |

You've got a great looking shoebox there. Fixing a bit at a time works well.
Having fun straight away is definately the best thing to do. It kind of reminds me of a time not too long ago . . . . . ![]() We got ours on the road in '99 and drove it everywhere, almost everyday for four years. Then on and off for a about five years and now it waits for a well earned 'rebuild'. Other projects have sidelined it big time. Stock rebuilt motor and Overdrive really got around. Lowered it with four inch blocks in back and cut coils in front. Went through two sets of 6.70-15 'stones. Rode great. The clutch gave up soon after painting it so out came the motor, with some highly appreciated help as shown in photo. ![]() Sorry about the blurry photos. the memories are a bit blurry too. Look forward to seeing it at Chopped in Oct. Keep up the good work. A day doesn't go by without my 'Helper' asking me when am I going to get that car back on the road. You just can't not have a great ol' time in a shoebox Ford. CM

hey michael, i think i need to get me a helper like that, she looks like she's doind a great job. i deffinately remeber your wife, she cried at the dinner table at the pub last october cause she watched our mate eat his steak then commence to comb his beard with the very same fork and she lost it when she saw that she couldnt stop laughing lol.
mate you make me wish i painted my flatty gold cause that looks really cool. but thats ok cause that isnt the last time mine will come out you can be sure of that. yeah the stock flatty is great, hummms along fine on the highway and sounds cool. i just won 3 97's for it off ebay but am unsure whether to run progressive linkage of just have one dummy cause three carbs is probably way to much for a stocker. thanks again for your help with the shocks, i am going to order some for the front asap so whil'e ive got the springs out to lower it i will chuck some new ones in. cheers again. des Quote:

while the bonnet was off i decided to clean up the engine bay a bit and shine up the cowl panel, it came up really really nice wish the whole car looked like this, also my triple 97's rocked up in the post, going to rebuild them soon and make them look new, i think im going to jet them down so that i can possibly run all three at once cause i really like the linkage that came with them, there going on an old fenton intake that my buddy Ryan Ford of kustom linez was nice enough to part with, that will be fully polished.
has anyone jetted these down, i have read a bit about jet sizes on here, just curious what size works well, for all i know this is a rebuilt stocker and 3 carbs is way over carb'd for this. but i want the look and sound of triples. they came equiped with a couple spiders (still alive) all the way from the states for $233 aus dollars, thank god for ebay. |

i cleaned and polished the side stainless for a bit better presentation while its at vic roads for rego on thurs, and thanks to a couple text messages from Shannon Cato i have some 4 inch blocks ready to throw in as soon as i get back from registration. he said 3's which is probably smart but they only had 4's and i couldnt help myself.
a couple coils in the front till i pick up some drop spindles while im in the states and chuck em in my bag to bring home should do. |

Nice shoebox, congratulations and great to see such enthusiasm for the build. I envy that!
You are lucky with the spiders, when my car came in last month - they found my new "pets" and charged me $900 to send them on to the next life,...I would have prefered the $900 to go towards a nice set of triples!! Look forward to seeing the next updates and photos,.. of car and BBQ's,...

Very nice spinner indeed. Seems you scored! Certainly cleaning up nicely.
As for the carbs, three on a stock flatty is overkill. If anything I'd block the centre carb off (rebuild it though and keep it as a manifold mounted spare in case of emergencies ). I've got twin 94's on my stock flatty running 42 sized jets with 3.5 power valves from memory and they aren't too bad. Not quite sure on 97's if they'd be similar setup wise though nver had any to tinker with.

hey cheers,
yeah the carbs are a bit of overkill, i have thought about other options like progressive linkage, running just the two outers, i will deffinately rebuild all 3 but i will have to read up quite a bit and see what people have done running triples jet wise, it runs so nicely now, i tunes it all up and its great i really dont wanna ruin a nice running engine buy over carbing it but i really also want them on there they look too good all sitting on the manifold. what size thickness plate did u use and did u space the other two up as well so they all equal the same height or is it that thin that you cant notice it. cheers des Quote:

I've only got a twin carb manifold. But a flat piece of panel steel with gaskests either side would probably be enough to block the centre carb off. So long as it seals alls good.
I had your dilemma, mine ran a single carb for years and it was brilliant. Finally bit the bullet and put it all on, should have done it along time ago. Do some research and see what others have run set up wise. Well worth the effort. Pre fitting just after a rebuild. ![]() And on the car...

hey mate, thanks, yeah i was thinking just cutting some panel steel exactly like u said and would still be fine with the other two running, i will probably still run a fuel line to it so its not obviously a dummy.
should look good but its going to be a fair amount of work to get this all polished up but i wanna do it so looks like ill be sitting out in the shed by the fire and sanding and polishing for a few long nights. your A looks neat, cool car. i want to build a 30 coupe or roadster in the next couple of years cheers des Quote:

set the points gap and timing, tuned the carb a bit better, bonnet back on and went to chicken williams shed for a beer, chicken and his old man are right into old bikes, they both own harleys, chickens is a 60's sportster and is building a honda 4 chopper, pretty cool, whicle he waits for his 53 olds to come from the states.
just thought id show you ow many bikes there jamming into there little shed, as we had a beer by there fire listening to chain on vinyl, they discussed the options for there new shed and the size and im thinking, yeah good idea, chicken is going to have a big long ass olds and there aint a hope of even getting on fender off to fit in the shed. nice pose on chicken and it wasnt even on purpose. |

well i got the spinner registered this morning, a little bit of trouble with the douche bags at vic roads, deciding they were gunna play captain road worthy instead of just putting the numbers into the computer, taking my money and giving me pates, but after a short trip to bursons and put in a dodgy $3 battery clamp, they gave me the plates and i went straight down to the post office were my lowering blocks were just sitting waiting to jump in.
this is temperary till i possibly bag it one day, i say that now but i'll probably just drive the thing and not do them. the backs down ran outta time to do the front that will happen tomorrow morning, and im off to the states in 6 weeks so i think ill just grab the drop spindles when im there and throw them in my bag, along with some other cool shit. heres some before and after shots, i really like tail draggin sleds so it will always have a bit of reverse rake. |

had a small club meet on friday night with 5 of the Eldorados and pulled the engine and box out again, rear main again, (the rope seal last time was not right, too small diameter)
going to do all the gaskets in the engine and gearbox and really clean up the engine this time in metallic gold and set up my triples, it wont go back in till the triples are set up ad it has headers on it so i can do a twin system mandrel bent exhaust for a nicer note with a big possibilty of flame throwers, probably most deffinately getting flame throwers. polished intake and chrome acorn nut set, maybe ali heads but i like the look of the stock ones painted. threw a chook on the Eldorados club spit and had a box of budweisers to get is through the night. good times. |

well, this has been discussed regularly between me and the other guys in the club about whether its getting a chop or not, personaly i am a big fan of un chopped coupes, but i am also a big fan of chopped coupes done correctly, well thought out, researched, and planned chops are the key i think.
the other day the qaurter window rubber was a bit tight and on closing it back uo the window cracked a little, only a 3 inch crack but then opened it and it crack around 9 inches, i sold, if that window has to be fixed may aswell chop it as me and Ahron discussed. so thats it, i stripped it out today and got it all prepared for the roof chop sat afternoon and sunday, Ahron, tex and the chicken man are bringing tools, welders and enthusiasm to cut up my shoebox. i have done a shit load of research on the hamb and other websites, i feel there is a bit of negetivity towards chopped coupes, but there are plemty of examples out there that show when done right and not rushed you can get a mean lookin chop and stance, i only have a couple things that are musts, its going to be a mild chop of around 3 and 4 inches front to back, something like that, anything to be=ig the qaurter windows end up to small and can look funny, also b pillars must be leaned, must be, one they look cooler this way and give a better flow in my opinion and two, it gives your more quarter window space, thats it. anyone feel free to give your 2 cents input. so it will be chopped and engine cleaned uo and back in to cruise as is for a while, leaving the paint alone for now, i dont expect to dp this really quickly, i want it to look right and finshed off with all stainless and glass being put back. |

Well you're absolutely right.....there is a lot of conterversy about coupes being chopped....2-door sedans..YES....coupes NO....top ends up too short for car ...out of proportion...heres hopen you do your homework and it turns out well....Mine is 51 coupe, lowered with cut-down 51 Merc skirts, bull nose...future plans call for 54 Pontiac grille, decked (license moved to bumper with 49 Chevy gaurd) and front badge removed...(I like the bull nose look)

hey thanks, yeah i see alot of mixed feelings but it can be done and look good, i am doin a shitload of reaearch and have found a few that have good proportions, i think if you chop e to much and dpnt get the quarters right it can wreck them but i wont be happy till it looks right, there are alot of cool chopped coupes out there just some that arent done right, but also its all up to how you want it to look.
sounds like a cool car, i like the licence plate on rear bumoer and a smoothed out decklid. looks nice cheers Quote:

Congrats on getting your spinner and wlecome to the HAMB..
I love the coupes un-chopped...they just look so........"cartoony" unchopped. Here's my old 49. I had to do some trimming of the rear body cross support to clear the driveshaft with 4" blocks and also had to open up the drieshaft tunnel and weld a strip into the top for more driveshaft clearance. I flopped the spindle supports and heated them to bring the geometry back in specs. Cut the coils too. I fab'd up mounts for a trans am/Z-28 1.25" stabilizer bar up front...made a world of difference in handling.

ha ha, they do look a bit cartoony, with the big bubble top, but they look cool to, then again you would say that rediculously big chops on tudor sedans look cartoony, but thats just me, yeah thats cool, i plan on baggin mine cause as cool as it is to say na fuck bags ill just drive it low everywhere, its alot cooler to just pump em up and get over shit without scrappin everything, it makes mcdonalds drive through very hard sometimes with there little speed humps ha ha

As I say to my fellow Vulture & Compadre, Shannon Cato 'We are winners in Spinners'. I must have wagged school on the day it was stated that only Tudors look cool chopped. Hell, if you have got balls of steel go the hardtop look. Airbags are for accordians & the Johnny come lately's......oops. Apolgies to anyone I have offended. Got my coupe taildraggin' & riding nice with drop spindles/steering arms/reverse eye springs/lowering blocks & gas shocks (thanx Mike Ahrens fer the specs via Mr Cato). Great thread, keep it coming. Greetings Hombre, If you would like to pm me & I can give you my contact details to discuss Spinology (I still can't get my head around that Shoebox terminology?). I'd really like to get my combo, the F100s, to play at Chopped this year. Any chance you can bend Ryan's ear. www.reverbnation.com/thef100s

Awesome stuff Derek! Way cool...
You've got a nice shoebox on your hands and am looking forward to seeing it at Chopped! Was just over at Mike's place scoping out his Shoebox. Very, very cool ol' Coupe.... And gee, I can't believe it's a stock Flatty! Sounds real nasty!! Keep up the solid work. HC.

Certainly not mucking about. Straight into it huh! Cleaning up really well. But there is nothing quite like building a car with the help of your mates. Good times indeed.
I didn't realise Ahron is working at Waddingtons but then again its been awhile since I caught up with his old man!

friday night, got a bit more done, chicken bought his chopper frame over to smooth up the welds and stuff while i keep working on the flatty. ahron came over later on and started planning out the cuts and measurement for the roof chop start tonight, we are heading in a different direction to the norm, there is plenty of info on choppin tudors, not a great deal on coupes, we both have a good understanding of how people genereally do it, the way we want to do it is alot ore work, but we think it will end up good, fingers crossed, our plan is to bassically, try keep the quarter windows at the same length but lean the radius, so as to not loos any length or not much and fab up some panels for the window frame, not sure if that makes sence but our goal is to try keep some of the size in the quarters instead of draggin everything forward which is cool for a tudor but on coupe "can" give you that small window on the quarters which i really dont want, slanted b pillars will also give it more size, Ahron is confident that it will work after talking about it for a couple hours and doing measurements last night, and i have a lot of confidence in him and we will make it work, may be a lot more work but we think it will turn out cool with a nice shae to the roof and not to small, rear window will lean down to meet the roof somewhere or near abouts to give the rear glass a nice rake type look.wish us luck. hope we dont fuck it lol, gotta have a crack though.
cheers heres a couple pics of hit last night, oh and i have found the eldorados club meet new food now, hotdogs in a pot on the fire in the shed, tooooooooooo easy. |

it would appear we chopped the spinner, alot of planning and measuring and we have deffinately gone about it a different way which is going to keep the roof at the same length and and the quarter windows long, is a lot more work and a bit of fabication will be required but fuck its a roof chop and it s not supposed to be easy and straight forward. other wise you probably wouldnt do it cause everypne would do it.
heres a few pics of the roof before |

once the roof and the door frames were stripped we got the back glass out and started to brace the rear window and then the inside of the car so as to not move and go weak when we started cutting

ok, so after me and tex had something to eat sat night waiting for Ahron to get here,
Ahron turned up and it was measuring and talking about it for a couple hours before we made any cuts, this has been discussed alot with other people aswell to get the desired look we are going for, so with ahron and tex on the ruler and me talkin it out with them for a while we had our tape lines and cut marks all measured up ready to go, i will try give as much detail on this as possible, first me and tex drilled out the spot welds on the inner of the a pillars (were the windscreen sits) and also on the other side near the drip rail and i free'd them up with a hammer and chisel, once we had the outer skin popped, i made two cuts on each one above and one below, on the straight of the a piller well above and below were our actual cut were the pillar will come down, the idea behind this is to take the outer skin of the a pillar off and do our cutting on the inner skin were all the strength is in the window and roof, so as to tack in and fully weld the inside at the end then trim the outer skin up to suit and sit back in and weld that too, giving you a much stronger way of doin it rather than just cutting through the entire pillar, it will be strong neat and we feel is the better way to do it, everyone does shit there way, this is just how were doing it. |

after those two peices were removed and marker left and right, me and tex cut the door frames off once we marked were exactly we wanted to cut, these were cut at the front just after the radius and the bottom of the back end of the door on an angle which was set on one with a set square and then transferred to the other door as to keep it as similar as possible, remebering my car will have slanted b pillars once completed, you simply mark where u want to cut and follow the tape or texter mark all the way around with the grinder, parts like inner skins you cant get to we clean up with an air hacksaw.

so while i was stuffin around with the door frames and the a pillars, ahron was making cardboard templates of how he wanted the rear qaurter windows to look, him and tex were then applying then to the roof and working out were the rear cuts should be, it was all happeing and moving along quite well with heaps of questions and discussions, which is really good thing, Ahron kept saying "you can do it the easy way which is shit or the hard way with a bit more work that will turn out heaps fuckin cooler", tex kept saying "cant wait to just cut this fucker up, and i kept saying "you guys are letting me doo all the cuts huh" which they both kinda smile and said "no shit, if you fuck it, its your car" which is totally fair enough, ha ha ha.
anyway, with the final taped out marks and shit it was gettin close to removing the roof, but first we had to mark out the a pillar inners and get the desired amount out, this is going to be a mild custom chop, so we agredd on 3 inches in the front and four and a qaurter to four and half inches in the rear, which is kinda hard to work out cause as your lay your rear screen you can move it around and prop it up to the desired look, but thats later, a pillars, then the b pillars cut on the angle for leaning later on, every cut on the strucural parts on the roof, you should have someone holding it so when it lets go your grinder doesnt grab and do something crazy like lop of a finger, they come in handy. heres the pics |

right so then it was onto removed the peice above the qaurter windows and when i say this i mean bassically because our whole goal aside from lowering the roof obviiously is to keep the qaurters at the same length, to give it more of the tudor look without loosing all the size in the qaurters, this is the hard part but will hopefully pay of in the end, this has been much discussed between the three of us recently as to how to go about this, i will be the first to admit that in this area i relly didnt have much of and idea how to go about this, i knew what i wanted and we all agreed on it but it was up to ahron and tex really to figure this out and fill me in on the plan, what we did was mark out at front of the qaurter window just after the radius and the bottom of it just before the radius, the pics will make more sence, we cut it on the straighter parts so that it can be heated and relief cut later to go back in and give a nice flow, it will require a little peice on each side to be fabricated to fill the gap as the top of the qaurter will end up a little longer, you will see what i mean, ma and ahron cut straight through the window frame and the drip rail and up about 5-6 inches into the roof the along out taped out line on both side so we could remove those peices first, like i said this is alot more work but my buddies have it under conrtol, it will pay off in the end, im in the moon hoodie, ahron has the hat backwards and tex is the bearded menace weilding the five inch with big cut off wheel and no gaurd ha ha

once those two panels were removed and set aside, the texas five inch massacre came in and cut straight through the a pillars and then we did our cut across the back above the window and down the c pillars as to leave the rear window sitting in stock position, that comes later, then it was roof off and a couple pics and a beer and cigarette break.
scary shit when your roof lifts off and we just put it on a panel stand and everyones like "fuck yeah" the guys are like "alright des good hanging out and cutting the shit outta your shoebox, we'll catch ya in a couple weeks or so when were free" lucky they were joking. |

the roof on the panel stand was short lived, tex cut the remaining amount out of the a pillars then we sat it back on, remembering roof chops are measured vertically or at least should be, so 3 inches vertically once leaned over can equite to like 4 and half or something like that that actually gets cut out of your window posts. so once the roof was put back on it was a massive shock cause it can look like alot but the more you look at it and the more it takes profile the more you go fuck yeah, it isnt over chopped its nice, in our opinion anyway, the thing Ahron said to me and really makes the most sence to me is this, i said "man it looks like alot outta the screen" and hes like "na its how your looking at it you gotta imagine the door frames are back on and the rears finished then you will get a good idea of how its gunna look",
he then said this, "if your not happy with the amount we can raise it back up" and i said "na fuck that it looks good its just a shock" he then replied "i dont think its over chopped i thinks its just right, and fuck, dude its a spinner its supposed to look like its gunna eat ya" fair enough. and couldnt have said it any better myself. |

we roughly clamped the a pillars up and proped up the roof to have a look at its size and stance, but obviously the a pillars didnt line u anymore, they require releif cuts around the top and bottom of each a pillar to push the bottoms in and the tops out, i had to unscrew the dash and lay it forward so we could make our releif cuts Ahron and texas marked them out and then ahron did the cuts and i got last bits done with the air hacksaw, while we did that tex marked out the relief cuts on the top of the roof siting on the panel stand and cut the measured amount off the bottom of the b pillars which we worked out aloud for a rake going down from the front to the back, he also aloud 5mm so if it wasnt enough we could still take that much out.
once Ahron and me had them cut he used a bit of light persuasion in the form of a block of wood and a big ass hammer, to move the bottom of the a pillars in and close up the gap, which worked a treat, when making the relief cuts you have to mark your cut mak it, then cut it a few more times to open it up a fe mill till you get what looks to be the desired amount, we then sat the roof back on to see how they lined up. |

alright so all the grinding, cutting, hammering and music got to the neighbour a bit, i had just got myself a fresh beer and hotdog off the top of the fire whe he banged on the door and to say the least he was not impressed, we had been having to much fun on a sat night and the time got away from us, so at 1.30am we couldnt make anymore noise, i guess i can appreciate that but what a soook he was ha ha.
we then discussed tomorrows work for another hour or so then went inside and continued to talk shit about ugly cars and shit engine conversions, 330 was bed time, not a bad bit of work for around 4 to 5 hours by the time Ahron got there and we started measuring. |

we woke up sunday morning less the fresh to say the least but we didnt drink much beer at all we were too busy working so we werent hung over but we were a bit shabby, all dirty faced and tired, nothing a coffe and some toast wouldnt fix, me and Ahron went straight backout and drank our coffee while we looked at it and made sure we were both happy with how the front look height wise, it looked cool as the next morning and we were really keen to get stuck into it again, shortly after Tex rolled up looking rough as, beard all shabby and dirty glasses from the night before, he walks in and goes "oh you fuckers have got coffee." so i made him one and by the time i got back out to the shed with round two of the coffee Tex and Ahron had the porter power out and had made the last relief cut in the roof we could complete last night cause ol mate next door cracked the shits.
the screen was starting to line up nice, you dont want the posts to make a W, so pushing and pulling and tappin till the lined up nice then Ahron tacked them on one side in place and tex did the same on the other while we all juggled the porter power and made sure it didnt move, a nice measure up and some moving around to make sure the window was squared and the front was tacked in for now, later we will put the porter power on the peak in the centre of the screen to give that a bit more uplight and open the screen up a bit more cause it moves a bit when moving the posts out, not much though, its really important at that stage to measure everything so its not leaning one way or the pther and get the centre in the center for the split screen. |

with the front tacke inplace were we want it to sit we moved into cuttin a bit around the rear screen so we can move it and lean it over, ahron and tex discussed and made there tape marks were we wanted to make cuts so it would lean, then we all made our cuts, i then had to get in and cut the backets on the side and the two in the middle for the parcel shelf so it would move with the rear screen, once they were all free we just pushed untill it sat down were we thought looked good for now, the rear section behind the screen will some more releif cuts and heating and shrinking aswell as tapping up before it will be finished but thats alot later, once we got the screen sitting roughly were we desired it to be we put the porter power under the roof were it was cut across the top of the rear screen so we could roll it outside and have a look at its profile anf figure out were the rear screen needed to move, when we first pushed it outside it was a bit fast backy, so ahron simply pumped it up a little with the porter power untill we felt it had a nice shape and curve to the roof, we then discussed some more and looked at it from all different angles to make sure we were all in agrrement it was what we wanted it too look like, we even peiced some 2 inch tape in were the window frames will go back and roughly sat that rear panel we removed earlier for the qaurter window back in so we could see it properly, having no engine in it makes it harder to get and idea of how it will look cause its up so high in the front but you get the idea, our mate Sean Hammond of the cabaleros came dwn to hang out and shout some inspiring words, aswell as take some awesome pics for us which i will post at the end, fucking good bloke and top car pic guy, his username is austhotrods i think on here, can take a pic indeed. thanks Sean.

we then rolled it back inside when we were happy with the rear window lean and shape and flow of the roof and put a peice of sheet metal across the gap and screwed it in place to hold it, i had made the pie cuts in the b pillars and leaned them to were we wanted them, tex squared em up tacked them top and bottom in place, the bottom will need to be cut and the corner peices fitted in but thats later on, we then just stood around and looked at it a heap, it was sunday arvo and we were all pretty stuffed and guys came round for a look so we all had a chat for an hour or two and discussed further modifications and paint coulors and all that shit, thats what we got done, i think pretty damn good for 3 25, 25, and 24 year olds, this is how it should be, mates havin fun working on cars, no dramas, tex and ahron really are two switched on guys who helped me out alot this weekend and cant wait to get stuck into it more when we can have another weekend, not sure what there plans are yet but i know there both really keen to get into it again. so we will see how much we get done next time hopefuly a little bit more this weekend, thanks heaps guys i owe you big time, im your bitch when its time, they really did kill it and thanks for my mates Jophy and Sean for hangin out taking pics for me, there really cool. good weekend over all, really hapy with how its turning out, it looks alot cut up at the moment but before you know it it will be finished and ill have to start doin all the other stuff like glass and garnish moulds and shit.
hope i explained as best i could so far, keep watching, |

Hey man, that spinner is looking sweet! I like what you are doing with the chop by keeping the size of the rear quarter windows. Keen to see a diect side shot to suss the profile. I got a 50 coupe off ebay about 5 years back but my deal wasn't so sweet. Mine turned up alot worse for wear and nothing like the "rust free" pics. Anyway... great to watch the progress on yours! You and your mates are doing a great job. Cheers.

Excellant work boys . Talk the shit out of something before you put a saw to anything . It obviously pays in the end . I like the idea of cutting the A pillar skin off so you can weld the inner structure easier . My Buick will get chopped in the future as well . Great progress pics. Didn't know you Aussies were so pumped for North American tin .

hey any of your shoebox/spinner guys that are watching my thread, i am finding it hard to decide what to do with my bootlid, and ideas or pics would be cool, custom in some way, or even just nice smoothed ones on chopped cars, mine looked fine before the chop now i think it may need to be fully smoothed and the number plate moved to the rear bumper.
cheers guys

early day off work due to strike, it looks like us lineys want more money, ha ha ha, i just like the early day cause i can work on my shoebox,
a little bit of inspiration from mr Chris Casny's thread and im starting on the seams and figuring out whether to peak them or just smooth them, also a bit of work on the flatty and going into waddingtons tonight to start messing with my qaurter window panels with brother Jeffree. will post pics will be a productive weekend as i leave for the states for a month in 4 weeks so i want to get as much done as possible and save some more vegas gambling money.

in the time waiting to do more on the roof and in between stripping parts for the flatty i removed the seam down the top of the rear qaurter panes and got is all cleaned up and grinded a bit ready for a metal bar that i plan on welding down it to create a peak down onto the frenched tail lights, should look nice unless i change my mind and just weld and smooth it but i think a peak could look cool, i also got a bit carried away and stripped most of the rear qaurter panel to see how much if any filler or layers of paint there is, or rust repair, so far so good, a little filler in a spot over old paint which i cant really work out why it was there, i am no panel beater but i cant feel any low spot there but who knows till i run a file over it, the bottoms of the qaurters are completely rust free, ever time i do more to this car i feel i got a better and better car.

i also got the fuel filler panel ready to be shaved and cut down and welded the filler neck at an angle so i can fill in the boot, will probably change fuel tanks one day if it gets bagged but this will work and is neat enough,

hey dude ive been watching from the start, love it , i have a 51 shoebox and have smoothed the top of the rear quarters and smoothed the gravel pan where it joins the piece under the deck lid and have smoothed the bootlid its easy ive done it three times now ,take the handle off put a piece of paper of the half moon shape with tape rub ya dirty hands over the edge and cut it out (thanks bob bleed) then make it outer steel and weld it and for a catch i used a boot latch from a holden commodore but has to be a cable release put the latch on the boot floor and have a wire hang under your car and put the striker on the boot lid, michael ahrens showed me these tricks i hope this helps some cant wait to see it at newstead this year and tell ryan ford ashley says to shave his beard will be ruff on my nuts
