It has been a crazy weekend here on the Plains of Kansas with wild storms and many tornadoes throughout the region. There were multiple tornadoes going on at once and one big one near us had 5-6 little tornadoes coming out of it. And we heard one overhead at our house but did not touch down. It was a night of back and forth to the basement as our small town civil defense siren kept blowing thru the night. But we survived the storms ok here.
But I want to talk about the KC swap meet. Things got started on Friday afternoon as me and Mrs. PF left for the 3.5 hour drive east towards the Kansas City area. Her sister and my favorite brother in law Lawrence followed us in his pickup truck and trailer. We stopped at supper time in the small town of Maple Hill, KS which is west of Topeka and home of Puffy's Steak and Ice House which is a great place to eat away from the mainstream crowds of bigger cities. L and I had the special which was KC Strip steaks and salads and it was GOOD.

After spending the night Friday night, L and I were up at 5 am and ready to drive another 40 minutes or so south to Lee's Summit, MO for the swap meet. We got a good parking place. The weather forecast was not good and some folks were scared away as many vendor spaces were left empty. This was a shame as the weather was perfect all day at the meet. I should mention there had been a rain shower overnight so the pavement was wet but was very nice on Saturday.

Dang it POV, I haven't had breakfast yet and you are flashing steaks and homemade onion rings. Looking forward to seeing some swap meet pix. Tough weather day and night, and the weather gal just said we will see wind 50-60mph today. Going to eat, will check back later. ~sololobo~

We love the treasure hunt aspect of a swap meet where you can literally buy just about anything...

We soon ran into one of my favorite buddies Dads-53 (Don) who live about 15-20 miles from this event. I never get tired of talking to him but he does get tired of posing for my photos I think...
![]() He always takes the time to tell me a quick story and I like to hear them. It is guys like him that make the old car hobby interesting. If it was just sheet metal and tires, then how fast would that get boring????

And speaking of characters we soon ran into Hamber Sodbuster who is also my facebook friend Chris Nelson and his Dad. They are great guys and had some good clean merchandise for sale. And have you ever heard the phrase "that guy can sell igloos to Eskimoes?"
That just may apply to his dad as he sold me a homemade boat anchor that I thought I really needed to own.....then I realized I do not own a boat....WTH was I thinking?

I liked this 56 Chevy hardtop except for the price...
Like most of them it looks better in the photos than it did up close but was still a nice car.

I have a pretty decent hemi valve cover collection and wanted to buy these for the "shock value" but tried to be more responsible with my cash this time and money is alot tighter than it used to be. I assume they came off of Barbie's hot rod...

L ordered a turkey leg and I had a giant pork tenderloin and they cost $6 each. I put some mustard, pickles, and horseradish on mine. After this light snack, we were able to "keep our strength up" and continue shopping...

I really liked this old Dodge A-100 pickup truck that was customized back in the 70's with decals to look like panel paint. The owner said he bought it in Vegas...had a 340 Mopar in it...

by now it was nearly 11 am and we had seen it all. I was lucky enough to buy yeat another 235 Chevy six engine and after I paid for it a guy in overalls came up to me and asked if I wanted another one. Of course I said yes...and got his phone number. More reports on that later. The Shriner's load stuff for you and had a bobcat loader to help me. They also shuttle you to your car with golf carts and shuttle trailers.....this is a great place to shop...

after leaving the grounds and getting some fuel we headed towards the racetrack area where lots of shopping places are to meet up with the women. At this time we suddenly realized we hadn't had any ice cream yet that day and went ot Culver's to fix that problem. I had chocolate frozen custard with real raspberry topping....this helped us get strong enough to begin the 3 hour drive home thru 50 mph storm winds....

It is hard.....real hard.
Imagine pulling a wagon thru a sea of people and carrying a heavy camera. And stop every few feet to take a photo while waiting for people to get out of the way. Not for the faint of heart. I only started doing it after my pal Rich Venza from GA kept bugging me...

Wow Looks like it was a good swapmeet I need to get there someday! I have so much stuff that might sell down there! like a 72 Elcamino parts car, 85 jag XJ6, 59 Ford 2 dr, 62 Buick Special. I'd like to move. Did anyone make it to the classic car auction in Omaha this weekend? I wanted to hit that as well, but just to much work at the shop!

Of all the events I miss from living in KC the Ararat Swap Meets are towards the top. Tornadoes, not so much, although we got a few of them around here last night, too.

Thanks for the pics and narrative Paul.
Dang.......I failed to realize the swap was this weekend. We were in KC on Friday, but had some things to do. I usually find something I want at that swap, even though the last few haven't been as large as they used to be. Was it held at the auto auction place again this year??

I like your pictures, as usual. I'm thankful that you and yours made it through the tornados okay. Our 2 granddaughters, my wife, and I were huddled in the basement for awhile Saturday night. Fortunately the tornado missed us by 5 miles or so. I'm off work for at least a few days until Spirit calls us back.

Great swap meet thread! I enjoyed it also. I found quite a few things there that were on my list (and then some) last Saturday and managed to have enough room to haul the stuff home in one trip!

Say there POVERTY,I didn't make this meet,I was at the shop fooling with my Corsair Bellytank, powered by a Caddy 429,Anyway the weather was bad around here and I was spending my money on parts I needed. And as a quick reminder,I am still in the market for a bellytank type box that a porta power came in.Keep me in mind Damnit.lol.That is a good meet.

it belonged to Sodbuster or his Dad and was $100 I think. They might still have it. Send him a PM.

You captured the highlights quite well. Loved the Hudson truck, but not the price. There also was a '61 Plymouth in the mix. Got any shots of that?
