I was at a small car show on Saturday and a spectator observed my HAMB licence plate tag. He then asked the question . What is the HAMB? I was stunned, I almost blurted out it is just a web site that I belong to. I hesitated because it hit me that it is more than just a web site to me and a lot of other HAMBERS. It took me almost 15 minutes to explain it to him along with a few other interested car guys, that had gathered around. This incuded all the advantages with out getting into the friends you meet on the HAMB adventure. Point is we sometimes take it for granted without appreciating what we have here.
I think we may have a couple of new members soon.

I had my HAMB shirt on at the Lonestar Roundup and someone asked me what HAMB meant, they had no clue. I was kind of shocked being the Roundup.

ITS MY BIBLE.....It to me is a learning and social group, That helps me. I try to help people with problems I have came across in my yrs, and MANY people have helped me with problems I have had. I tell EVERYONE about HAMB. I'm completely into the history and stories of yrs before my time. Its great to tslj to people that actually lived it. I'm only 40 so i missed the great eras. But that is the stuff I am interested in....My wife calls HAMB my girlfriend ....I am addicted to the endless knowledge from every GEARHEAD out there....THANKS TO ALL JEFF

I was asked by a friends wife one day. I told her it stands for Humping A Monkey Backwards. She almost choked laughing.
I finally explained the best I could, but I think she liked the first description better.

I find myself having to "warn" people about the potential for rudeness toward new people more and more all the time, do any of you feel that way? Seems there has been alot more bashing on here and a lot less help in the last year or two. Jim

The criteria must be understood by everyone. Modern, slick, 'rods', 18"+ mag wheels are not for here. When national event's are covered, many posting (no matter how nice) are not criteria. Even 'traditional' themed shows are being bombarded by cars nowhere close. Learn. Should have seen the bashing back in '04 and earlier.

It's funny, but we who are on car forums automatically think every car enthusiast spends time on these sites too, but that is not always the case. Lots of times when I run into a car owner who has an oldtimey kind of rod or custom I will ask them if they are on the HAMB and more often than not I get a blank stare. They usually say they don't do computers much or that they have never heard of it.
I guess some people actually go out into the garage and work on their cars instead of sitting here every day and night like the rest of us. But that car work is HARD STUFF ! ![]() Don |

the hamb has saved my ass countless times. i have never seen the amount of info anywhere else.most times i dont have to ask a question, just use search and i find out what i need.i average about 6 hrs a day on here. about 3 hrs in the early morning, like before daylight and about 3 hrs after we come in from the shop. i have fallen asleep at the computer and slammed my head into the desk more than once lol but no longer than ive been here ive seen it change some. seems like more talk about slamming the frame and 17s etc.if the boss dont say nothing then im not either. i have even stayed at home when i was invited to go on a few runs with a m.c. club to work on our cars.wouldnt have done that before the hamb.!!

Even in the HAMB people need to be told over and over that it's a tradional forum. It has changed alot over the years, and we are constantly being attacked by ratrodders and streetrodders, so in a way we are helping people by being rude to them, either you have it or you don't, you cry about it or you get over it and listen carefully to what this place is about.

I'm also impressed by all the different levels of traditional hot rod nutcases we have on here...and that's what I find myself telling so many people about when discussing the HAMB.
You've got the hot rodders, the drag strip folks, the land speed freaks, the fabricators, the motorheads, the OSE collectors to name a few...and then there's the rest of us who I think fall into a mix of all of those catagories. Yep...I think the HAMB is a pretty cool place!! I'll be sticking around for some time.

HAMB has pulled me out of alot of jams!,Being one of the first 500 i can honestly say that its more "helpful now then it was" It was almost like a "chatroom before.
I started out by asking " how do you put Olds valve covers on a SBC"!! Talk about a fuck up!!LOL. But!! I still think we need "germ" back!! JimV

My wife thinks it's the HAM where I spend way too much time. She does know that it's about traditional cars and we go to Billetproof and the East West no Overheads because of contacts on the HAMB though.
Wearing a HAMB shirt to a swap meet gets a lot of comments from guys who check the classifieds often or daily but never post on the board. My two running buddies don't have or want traditional cars so I don't consider spreading the word to them. But I don't tell my sister where I go with my boat either. Some things you just keep to yourself and go on about your business. To me the HAMB is the encouragement to get out and build my truck the way I always wanted it without being caught up in the trend of having to have the "latest" this that or another or be considered out of date. The old stuff that has been around forever and was pulled out of someone's discard pile and buffed off works fine and is often well appreciated. The only gripe I have is about that little cadre of individuals who will rave about the work of one of our pro builders in one thread and then slam a guy/gal for having any pro work done on his or her car in the next thread. Not having mad rod building skills shouldn't keep one from owning and driving a traditional rod or custom.

My fiance always thinks Im looking at porn when I'm fiaxed on the TJJ app. I have to show her "Look this guy is helping me design my suspension so I dont kill the whole family when the roadster hits a pothole". "Oh" she says...
I love being able to teach and learn on here. Everyone has their expertise! Sometimes I get frustrated by a small percentage of the members, but I have to remind myself; there is like 150K members on here, there is bound to be a few window lickers in the bunch. |

I already Love this place...... people don't seem to be too hard on "noobs" and I have learned by reading, a hundred "right ways" to do just about everything.... and have actually changed my way of thinking on some things.
I am a Tattooer by trade, and have belonged to a forum for over 10 years that is owned by a WELL respected Tattooer, and the tattoo "elite" run the place, guys I looked up to 20 years ago.......THEY are hard on noobs..... I don't recall ever seeing the words "go cut your fucking thumbs off, you douchebag hack" on the H.A.M.B. .... but I have seen MANY posts similar on that forum haha. I thank all of you for the WEALTH of knowledge you share freely, that would take more than a lifetime to aquire on my own.

Hambing: V. The act of surfing the HAMB on the iphone app. Often used when having to wait on the wife doing some kind of shoping you don't want to. I.E. Wife " Sorry hun I'll be just a few more minutes (______) (something lame) , Husbands responce "It's okay, I'll be in that chair over there Hambing."
I've met some GOOD People on here, Ricard D, (yess NAtty boy himself...) and Sam Navarro. and I have learned good taste in cars. Harshest place for noobs hands down is Pirate (4x4 web site.. ) this place is play land compared to that site. (been on pirate since 01. )

The HAMB. It's the greatest source of meat-and-potatoes automotive knowledge that I've ever seen, and obviously the Mecca of rodding and kustoms for the people that get things done THEMSELVES. Blood, sweat and tears. The HAMB is fragile. It has to be tended to night and day to keep it pure. It's like Austin, TX. Everyone loves it but if you want keep Austin weird you have to keep the Johnny Dallases and L.A. Dumbfaces out of it. Ya know? The HAMB has tight security as riff raff is kept to a minimum. Even I have broken the rules and asked off-topic, yet still automotive related questions (due to the fact that everyone everywhere else is a fucking idiot and when BOOB needs an answer he needs it fast and it needs to be correct) but I was quickly reminded that this is THE HAMB GODDAMMIT, TAKE THAT DUMB SHIT TO AUTO ZONE! I was punched in the face, warned, and forgiven. I trust my fellow HAMBers as they trust me. We have a lot of fun on The HAMB. But don't cross the line. The HAMB is to be respected. Ryan will not hesitate to lay the pimp hand down the very second a buster ass jive turkey disrespects The HAMB. And I've got his back. Be warned, rumor has it that said "pimp hand" has been extended nation wide through the use of a group of reckless minibikers that anxiously await their next orders. It's just a rumor though, I can't be certain. The HAMB. Pimps up, hoes down. Blood in, blood out. Keep on keepin' on. Life's a garden, dig it. Balls to the wall. Hammer down. DRIVE IT, and drive it like you stole it from D.W., that'll put a fire under your ass for SURE!

The HAMB is motivation for me.
I never did an introduction. 51Mercules came across Grouchos Lowrider thread with someone asking questions about my Dad & Uncles chopped 64 Rivi. Which they built in '67. They're (Heckle & Jeckle) not 'compooter' literate, so I jumped in on their behalf. That's how it started for me. Prior to that, I had never heard of the HAMB |

What is the HAMB? Lurk for a while and you'll find out. I found this gold mine of wonderful people, with a google search for hot rod info. Lurked for a while and stayed. I'm also met and worked with some of the most knowledgeable people this side of Mars. And they want to be helpful. Just follow the rules. Need suspension/chassis help, ask for Elpolacko. Want to see some good designs, look up Jeem. Need pictures of ideas for a build, do a search. Its all here.
One rule to never, never, never, ever break. Post a picture of the Boss. Es ist VERBOTTEN!

When I first joined this site, I joined it without really understanding what it was all about. Now I get it and understand why the newb's get such a lashing. I love automobiles and fabrication of any period. With that being said, now that I've been here a while, I hate seeing anything non-traditional creep it's way in here. There are other sites for that stuff.

Then someone told me repeatedly I should check out this H.A.M.B thing. Somehow I scewed up and it took three days to get on. A minor spacing in my site name caused it. Even had to get Ryan out of his sick bed to help. Among many things I'm not, I'm not a computer whizz. In the two weeks or less I've been here I've learned a lot, which old dogs ain't supposed to do. Sent a bunch of messages and most have replied, even asking me questions. Makes me feel good! Haven't been many places but have met many of the old guys who started this hobby and many of the vendors. Feels like home already. But now I feel sort of sad. My intellegent intro was mostly overlooked. And I write too much shit. I jumped right in and started making comments, sometimes about crap I probably no longer remember. Yet no one has been rude, bashed me or called me names. You don't love me!

I went thru a lot of trouble going to the Florida Keys just to take that picture. Then I had to cut and paste each car into it. My avatar does not suck! But I do feel better. Thanks for caring!

I went to a local parts store last week and for the first time I noticed a shelf behind the counter with some Rat Fink stuff and a decal that said "leaving billetsville" and something else. I pointed it out to the two guys working there [they had a little hot rod ink too] who does that belong to? Us they said; you guys traditional rodders? yep they said. HAMBERS? you know it, they replied. No wonder I can ALWAYS get the weird stuff from them that no one else can find. They speak our language!
We are everywhere!

Heck, I don't even have a strictly HAMB friendly ride, so I don't flaunt it much unless someone is specifically asking about it.....but I LOVE this place and check it out daily, daydreaming about the day that I will have an appropriate ride- Like an "A", Banger powered, dropped axle, full fendered....there I go again.
I've made alot of friends here and gotten alot of advice here. Best car site I've found that is not strictly limited to one model or make of car.

This where you can see more cool cars than ten life times of car mags, make great friends, learn a bunch, view and learn amazing historical info, stay in touch with friends you make here, sell and buy great stuff at no charge. Isn't that a bunch! ~sololobo~

What I have learned on here in a year exceeds the sum of my previous 36 years.
People I've met off this board are amazing, the skills and the willingness to share knowledge is second to none, and the cars.... Oh man are the cars amazing. If this site didn't exist I would not be building myself a read hot rod. Period. Searching the archives and reading has taught me immeasurably. |

Denise and others have got it right. the "old" HAMB was a brutal place for any who thought they were "king of the hill" and soon found themselves knocked down a notch or two. I had a fair grasp of things automotive with several years of national participation in drag racing and having owned a high performance engine shop and a oval track fabrication shop. With all of that (and looking back not all that big a deal) it wasn't but a couple of weeks posting I had my ass handed to me by one of the "REALLY"" knowledgeable HAMBers about a subject I thought I knew a fair amount about. This place is many things but is always the best "Traditional Hot Rod and Custom" site on the net.

I don't believe you have to have two-faced people to learn anything. It's discouraging and it can 'Scare' people from the Tradition! How helpful is that!? Help = ENCOURAGE.
I've had a couple encounters with two-tongued. . whatever's. Don't need any more of them.

Someone posts in a for sale ad and they are new, I send them a P.M. and explain that they are in for a beating if they don't follow the rules. They usually send a message back and are thankful and probably follow the rules better after that. Always nice to see someone's hamb tag on a car. You have an instant start to a conversation.

What is the HAMB? Everything automotive that I love, posted some of the best people on Earth. It is a lot more than just cars, there are a lot of people here that I hope to meet in person some day. The road trip and event posts with lots of photos give us all a look at parts of the country we hope to see some day. There are far more historians here than on any other website IMO. It's 2:30 in the morning, if it wasn't for the HAMB I'd be sleeping. Bob

Not a chance!
I don't always bother to read the directions on things so I figure one pass for a new guy. If he doesn't bother to read the rules after one polite warning he probably deserves the ripping he'll get and he probably wasn't going to fit in. That guy that gets scared off may be the guy that has the info that I need or maybe even a part I need!

Me neither. I discovered my love for Kustoms when I started lurking here in 2006. We didn't have them over here in England in the 50s/early 60s (the specific era I'm interested in) and now I can learn from people who were building the real deal back in the day and others who have an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of my favourite genre. As for hot rods, I know precisely Dick, except that if I did want to learn about them this is the only place worth coming to.

I will say with complete honesty that this is the most informative and knowledgeable board I have ever been on. But it's not without its whiny cunts who just like to dump on everything. Seems to be less of that over the past couple of years, though.

Yes, I've got my balls busted especially when I first joined. Seems like there's a "Click" of guys that think that they are "The last word" and can Zap you. I did get some private emails from people that agreed with me, and then after a while I started meeting some great members!

Hats off to the HAMB and all the believers that are spreading the word about Hot Rods, Customs, tech, art, everything. This website is all of that and more. It has provided me with tech from other HAMBers. It is a great experience to share the knowledge.
Great thread Larry. Where did you get the HAMB tag? I gotta get one, or more for my rides!

I told my non computer using car buddies to imagine standing in a garage the size of a huge stadium.Filled with guys that are car crazy and all talking cars you can ask the most off the wall question and someone will have the answers you need .Its a tech manual , advice column product review board and a never ending car magazine that everone adds to the articles. A few that told me I was wasting time have had me find answers on here .

I actually had to explain it to a co-worker of mine today when he asked me why i was so intentively staring at my phone for long lengths of time( On the HAMB at work on my phone). Took me a few minutes to explain it, everything from the advice, techs, clasifieds, to the ass chewings that some people get when they get out line! As everyone can tell, I dont post very much or reply, mainly just "listen" in on ALL of the really great knowledge everyone on here has. I would have an alliance membership for sure by now but feel like I need to "earn my keep" I thank everyone for the time they put in on this thing... good and bad!!!

It's many things to me. Being stuck growing up between the late 50's and the muscle car era, I've never found cars I didn't appreciate.
It's a melting pot of tastes. Customs, stockers, hot rods, they're all here. It's the best damn "How do ya do.........." place to get tips and help. It values tradition and friendships ! And......if you're having/had a totally fucked up day and need some comic relief........any photo of Breeder WILL make you laugh your damn ass clean off!!!!! ![]() Sorry Toddles.........I had to say it......

OMG, the girl I share my office with is into an online game that she refers to as her "second life". I talk about the HAMB and she talks about Second Life.

I enjoy the alliance. Sadly mine just expired, and i've been so low on cash i couldn't re-up .I'll be back however. The bitchin' firewall tag (Hand pressed! mind you) Is reason enough to support the place...and you know, the hours and hours of all info/pictures/ learning etc. the Alliance discounts are great too! I've built alot of my car off the place ![]() Just such a cool collective. MUCH more than a "This hotrod website im on". I do take notice that when I hit car shows, the HAMB cars are deffinately up top, if not THE best. They got SOUL pull the trigger on the Alliance membership, Fight for bitchin' rods & customs... He can't do it alone.

I told a guy it's a sandwich shop that has a great tuna melt. He didn't get the joke, so I explained it to him and wrote down the link for him. Hope it's been a great resource for him. It is for me.

I've had my balls busted here and I've busted some balls. I probably write a lot of worthless posts that have no real value - mostly comments (like this one). And, I can definitely be a smart ass, depending on my mood. When I ask a question, I expect smart ass comments. Often pearls of knowledge are hidden inside. I always learn something and I'm entertained and amused at the same time. In fact, I learn something here everyday. I'm in awe of the talent of so many of the members and as far as post counts? That doesn't mean anything really. Experience will tell you the difference between quality and quantity. To try to explain the HAMB to someone? I have tried to explain it on a few occasions but end up stopping in the middle because I realize they aren't getting it and I'm just rambling. Yeah, I think you have to experience it yourself and it's definitely not for everyone. I don't bother trying to explain any more. If the HAMB is for you, you'll eventually find it on your own. I love the FNGs that come on here all full of themselves and are completely flamed and get really pissy about it, crying and stomping their feet like little girls. I have to laugh. What I love even more are the FNGs who can laugh at themselves and realize that they are being tested. You know, the ones that can take the punches without getting disrespectful or pissed off. Those are the ones that I have a level of respect for regardles of their level of knowledge. Yep, the HAMB is like a grouchy old dog. You need to approach it with humility and it can turn out to be a faithful companion. If you don't, you might get your ass bit. I like that. It's real. Okay, I guess this is just another of my worthless comment posts. Go ahead, bust my balls! I can take it. Last edited by Saxman; 05-27-2012 at 09:14 AM. |

Saxman, that post completely and utterly nailed it in every single department as far as I'm concerned. Worthless post my ass, they should make that a sticky.

Hardly
Any More Build threads As much as I love this place and all(most) of you, the amount of quality threads has diminished to an all time low. I come on here to be inspired and challenged and to learn. Lately all Ive been learning is how your car attracts little children and your dog is named after a motorcycle part! I know it sounds foolish, but when a good thread with info and pictures gets buried after about 15 responses, and a thread about a "rusty henway found in a dumpster" can get over one hundred responses, it starts to get annoying... Rant Over...group hug...I feel better.

Just look through some of the older build threads! You'll feel better. Free therapy.
I went through all of the Bass '49 build threads. You'd be surprised at what you missed the first or second time round. The devil is in the details.

the hamb is a forum for people who seem to think traditional means to never try
anything new.. ever.. because for some reason that's what hotrodding is about.

I remember getting dragged over the Newbie coals by GERM! And it wasn't nice to say the least. But once you got your scars from intiation, I've learned, been saved(more than once) and had a blast over the years. I have met some incredible people, had some great times, and look forward to more in the future.
How do you explain that to a "stranger" |

Can't remember the details but he apparently was having a bad day and we made up. Personally met him later at Curtsix's SE Baltimore Cookout show. Really cool guy. I've learned alot early on about what the HAMB is about. I used to belong to other hot rod type forums that are way misunderstood, but now this is the only one I visit.

When I was a kid, I saw my car buddies every day at school, and went places with them on the weekends. Now I'm an old fart, and the few car buddies that are still around have real lives and don't want to hang around and talk car stuff. Well, not as much as I do.
So I've been coming here nearly every day for more than ten years, where I can hang around with car guys. I spend more time now on a couple of HAMB social clubs than I do here on the main board, but it's still a useful and entertaining place to discuss stuff and see what other people are up to. Thanks, Ryan, for putting this whole shebang together. |

It was at one point a place for like minded rod and custom builders to share information and camaraderie along the lines of traditional rod and custom building. Then in '03 some ass hat whom I decline to name, that would be sept '03 to be exact, signed up and the whole place went to the dawgs. I think that the HAMB has a different meaning to different people. For example it is my major means of contact with the outside world. I am not house bound by any means but nearly all my friends are gone. Not to complain most "friends" are only aquaintences anyway. I learn things on here that I either never knew or have forgotten, that is a good thing. Never the less for the most part I have contact with like minded people who I have grown to consider to be friends. Its not the same as eating and bull shitting face to face but it is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. There are more folks signed up on the HAMB than I would like to count and on any given day if you ask any one of them you will get a different answer as to what the HAMB is. Different spots for different dots I suppose.

Driving my olds back home keeps me sane...
Being in the garage doing anything car related keeps me sane... Being in the Air Force, sometimes we deploy. Right now I'm in Afghanistan for 4 months. No nice drives in the olds, no time in the garage. While I'm here the HAMB keeps me sane and fulfills my automobile addiction. Whether its a build thread or just an interesting discussion... its with my kind of people and i LOVE it! And the evening video chats with the wife is nice ![]() So thanks to the all of you who make this a daily escape from this god forsaken hell hole here.

I remember the 'beating' I got when I joined, back then I was younger and full of myself. Now I'm older and full of my self, though I must admit the 'beating' was not all that bad.
On posting into the Army Parachute School, we were doing a free fall jump. I was standing on the ramp of a DHC-4 Caribou watching the Jump-Master and waiting for the signal to go when I was suddenly propelled out into the wild blue yonder, about 5km from our DZ. I found out later that it was one of my best friends in the world that gave me the shove on the RSM's word. That was a fucking long walk back, you look like a real dickhead in jump suit and parachute under arm walking down the side of the road. So I guess its all perspective just how bad you take a so called beating, if your offended by the taunts here it may just be time to fuck off. Doc.

The HAMB is just like my grandfather.... Equal amounts of mind blowing knowledge and baffling bullshit
This place feels like home to me because I built hot rods with him when he was still alive and like this place he would help anyone with any problem if you were gracious and did not waste his time. So truly in so many ways, this place has always been familiar.I know I am officially a semi-new guy but I lurked for years before signing up and the HAMB has pulled me through several builds of my own. |

It's a place where older folks can spend time on the computer, worring about younger folks spending time on the computer.
Oh...and traditional hot rods and customs.

enfieldjoe asked about topper tags. Was lucky I got mine last year. Just checked the store and again THERE AINT NONE!! What gives?? You got to have an existing mold for these things. Is this a back door, home garage project?? I get the same interest put to me about the HAMB. It's sure a "BRAGGING" thing to promote the HAMB. Where the hell are the basic HAMB T-SHIRTS. I have yet to be able to see one with a nice big HAMB logo front and back or a small pocket logo on the front and a large on the back. Let's get one out there. You damn sure wont get stuck with them. Red and black shirts available with a simple white print , maybe grey (not white)with a red logo print. I would think it would be good $$$$ maker, even to donate profits to a good charity. Not familiar with the legal structure of the HAMB. (Pres. VP Sec. Treas, etc) if there are any.

Man you really don't have a clue after 2 years do you? Limited edition runs. And the HAMB shirts are at http://jalopyjournal.myshopify.com/ You get what Ryan decides it's time for. If you don't like it tough. And you don't make things with the HAMB logo without Ryan's permission. He is the OWNER. And this is his lively hood. "Steal our stuff, we'll kick your teeth in." Easy enough.

As yall can see im a "newbie" myself. Though i joined about 3 years ago im still very careful about what i say. Not that im scared of some keyboard bully but i would like to earn the respect of my fellow hot rodders. I enjoy reading things and learning and seeing the pictures of some really cool TRADITIONAL hot rods and yes.....I too sometimes get frustrated with seeing pictures of Billetmobiles from corporate shows...

Car clubs and loners alike on this board look to the HAMB for guidance. Almost like our federal government of traditional hotrodding, if you will. If you belong to a club, or not, you are part of a larger club/community known as the HAMB.
These are just some of the things I love about this place

I am not sure if you join the HAMB or if you sign up to the HAMB. I registered a while ago. It took a while after that before I was excepted or is that accepted I got those two words so confused, anyway I think that even today I am more tolerated than accepted. A lot of everyone that utilizes the board are in the same boat I am afraid. I donot think that there is any way to actually describe the HAMB, the simplest and most accurate is to say that it is a forum or message board dedicated to traditional customs and hot rods. Apart from that it must be experienced. Some will enjoy the experience and others will run as fast as they can away from it. That is just the way that it is. The HAMB is not for everyone. By the way just to make everyone happy, I have stopped suggesting that people "check it out" if they are into traditional builds they no doubt already know about it and if they are not why do I want them here in the first place.

You could be right, however I have not come across DONG before and hope I never do again. I began the thread with a fairly serious comment about the HAMB and DONG is one of the negatives found on it.
