Technical 1953 Chevy "Wheels & Full Size Wheel Covers"

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by fordstandard, Mar 26, 2017.

  1. Help please;
    * I want to run full size wheel covers on my 53 Chevy Club Coupe.
    The wheel size 15 x 5.5wide 5 Lug 4 3/4 Bolt Pattern

    The wheels that came with on my car are probably smoothies they do not allow a wheel cover to snap on to them. ( SEE PICTURES)

    I was told - IS IT TRUE ???
    * An original 53 wheel has center clips that can be chiseled off and it will then accept full size wheel cover.
    * A 1954- 56 Chevy wheel will accept full size covers since they do not have center clips.
    * I could by same size wheels in1970-1977 Monte Carlo
    * Late 70's Buick intermediate is same size
    * 70's/80's GM Car ( ? which ones??)
    * Certain Camaros and firebirds (? Which years?)
    * Mid size 1963-1989 GM (? which cars?

    Look closely at the area where the wheel cover would attach, near the outside of the wheel. The 54-56 wheels have four little nubs there. Later wheels with the "safety rib" have an indent groove all the way around.

    I think the suggestion to remove the clips is a bit misguided, that's not the problem.

  3. If you want to use 55-6 Chevy full covers they will not stay on your stock 53 wheels well. If you use other type 15 inch caps that have teeth the wheels will work. Some Cadillac and Pontiac will not work Period. They have special centers. Tell what caps you want to run!
