I think the problem is those grooves are not only deep but have a very sharp point so can’t make a seal.

I’ve dropped the heads back, the guy who did them isn’t in till Friday

  4. On a slightly positive take, at least it's only the head surface and not the block too.

I guess so. I didn’t actually ask for the heads to be skimmed. They didn’t need it

  6. Well, that's not good then.

Now it would be great time to resurface those exhaust manifolds and head exhaust surface and leave those prone to leak gaskets out.
Would you like some more tea?

They were done. That was the real reason I took the heads off. But when I took the valves out it needed guides so I asked for new guides and to skim the exhaust.

The surface finish on the exhaust face is fine, so fuck knows what they were doing with the head to block face. They’ve not actually agreed that anything is wrong yet though.

It’s nowhere near what you need for any sort of gasket. In 30 years of building engines I’ve never seen a mating face like that. The valleys are thousandths deep. You can’t run your fingernail over it.

  12. That should be a lot smoother than that. Any head I have gotten back, I just run my biggest flat file over the surface and call it done. That is a speed and feed issue.

Got the heads back from the shop and they’ve machined them again, much better.

    Heads back on and torqued

I got some different exhaust gaskets from Remflex but they’re the wrong ones, so it will go back with the steel and graphite ones.

Well at least there was no arguing about it and you could get something done. My machinist is a 72 years old prima dona with more whims than Naomi Campbell. Good, but mad.

I’m not 100% happy with the wall gasket at the rear so hopefully not going to be 3 times!

Tim..I always use the Permatex material called the "Right Stuff" on the rear china wall... never using a Gasket.... I just let it seal up well for 24 hours.... I know this point is mute.. but Learned this the hard way as well.
    All looks awesome.

  19. The Right Stuff is the bomb. Word to the wiser than myself... mask off anything that will be visible after the fact. It is only slightly less offensive than POR15 in the wrong place...

That’s how I’ve done it before, but went with sealant and a gasket this time. We’ll see.

Damn, one of those good news/bad news things. I am happy you got it running and bummed that you have repairs to make.
Keep after it, you will be driving it soon!

    Thanks. Will do.

Ordered some core plugs and got the PCV properly set up

Brake booster doesn’t work, pedal is rock hard and there’s air escaping when you press the pedal but not when it’s at rest, which I think means the bypass valve has failed. It’s also a bit Heath Robinson. Don’t think this is how it left FoMoCo but it is a Ford booster, will have to dig into the parts book.

Drawn a blank on the booster. According to the parts book should be C2AZ-2005-F but can’t find one or a replacement.
I know people keep telling me how amazing the Ford parts numbers are but they really are gash. Never had a problem with part numbers from VW Chevy BMW Mercedes Maserati Fiat Harley KTM Peugeot TVR Austin MG Jaguar etc but Ford you just can’t find them!!
