Thanks Dennis. Was hoping to get it in and started this weekend but I’ve just noticed the new water pump shaft is bent

I’ve straightened the pump with a hammer. Will see how it holds up. About to get started.

No, but Vettes do too so it probably just seems normal to me!

Have you ever changed the shifter seal on a Ford-o-matic?

Just wondering if there’s anything tricky, I’ve got the factory workshop book, the new seal I’ve got for the throttle shaft is an o ring but the pic in the book looks a bit more substantial

Most people go for the HiPo gold but I thought that might not look right on a gold car. The original colour was bluey green so I went to paint shop a picked a colour I liked. It pops even more in real life.

Need to do an air cleaner too. I tried the carb and air cleaner last night. It’s really close to the hood so need to find some plasticine or something for a proper check.

A loosely balled piece of aluminum foil works well for checking clearances on things like that.
I enjoy watching the progress you are making on this Mercury.

  17. Or if the clearance is close, try something like a grilled cheese sammich...

Does it still work without the cheese?

For The kickdoewn shaft seal, its doable under the car but shift shaft seal....well, never donit under the car.detent spring and ball might be mission impossible to keep in their bore during installation.

Don’t you hate being right. I knew the surface finish on the heads wasn’t acceptable, they’re pissing water out without even being run. FFS!

It did look like this but won’t for long.

I bet you are so upset, that you must drink rather large cup of strong tea!

When you get those heads out, check the guide rings for bottoming out.

Will do. I didn’t check them as there wasn’t much showing above the gasket so they should be ok but will double check.

  26. Is it leaking between the head and the block or from around the exhaust manifold bolt? Are the manifold bolt holes blind or do they go into a coolant passage in the head?

Head and block, the bolts are blind. It’s clearer where it’s leaking from in person. The other side is leaking in more than one place. I’ve drained the block so hopefully it’s not filled the bores up. Have got the day off work tomorrow so will try and pull the head. I’m a little worried I might not be able to pick them up over the fender, since my accident my left arm isn’t very strong.

  29. That is more serious than a head-surface finish thing. You will get to the bottom of it.

I’ll show you the pic in 5 minutes. I’m pretty sure it’s head surface, just having a cup of tea
