Event Coverage Formula 1 and hot rods, an odd couple matched up for a day.

So I'll keep this on topic as much as I can while hoping to give an insight into a pretty special weekend myself and 21 others had at the 2017 Melbourne formula 1 Grand Prix.
The local cruising club, Melbourne old school cruises where approached about hot rods participating in the drivers parade. From there a call was put out on FB and the lucky few were chosen.
I was lucky to be joined by 2 great mates and their cars, frank (Ratbastad's )deuce and Doug's 33 roadsters, so 3 traditional cars made it on the grid. We prepped the cars during the week, bearing in mind they're flathead and banger powered.
Raceday started with a 5 am start, at the track at 6.30am, numerous drivers briefings, how to talk and approach drivers, running orders etc.
It gave us a small snapshot in the intricacies of F1 . My driver, Lance Stroll, 18, from Canada , on debut was great, talked hot rods, where he's from etc the whole way round.
I'm sure for most these guys it was their first time in a hot rod let alone a flathead powered car.
This was really a bucket list day, entering the main straight on race day is something that will stay with me and the others forever, a real chance in a lifetime.
Thanks to Melbourne old school cruises for making this happen.
( not all pics are mine so credit to photogs)

That was crazy cool to me. Race-wise, I was sure hoping for better from Haas, but there are plenty of races left in 2017. Gary

Did they show that on the TV coverage? If so I missed it.

Yup, still have to pinch myself that it actually happened. Extremely nervous leading up to the time of heading trackside, but just an unbelievable site rounding the last turn and heading up the main straight and seeing full grandstands, masses of media, drivers doing their group photo shoots, its really hard to describe. In a small way we got a glimpse at how an F1 driver may feel pre race.

  16. THAT IS SO COOL. Watched the race yesterday, didn't see anything about that but I fast forward through the talking heads stuff at the beginning so I must have missed it. Wish Ricciardo or the Haas team would've had a better time of it, but it was nice to have F1 back. I think @Ryan needs to get something similar put together when for the US Grand Prix in Austin!

  17. Man,what a nice group of roadsters, sometimes I think most of you Aussies have a better idea of what a hot rod should like than half the roadster owners here in the states with their over the top paint jobs and tweed interiors. HRP

IMG_1906.JPG That is great! Shame it did not get any coverage in US. NBC is a horrible network, so sad they have the $$$ to buy the sole rights for TV. Wish more events would realize how much people like to see our old rides. Side of my house after race.

  23. I wonder if any of the drivers get infected with the Hot Rod bug after their ride.

This is a cool and interesting mix, nice to see Hambers getting involved.

  24. Two of my favorite things. The race started at 11:30pm and I dozed off for the start, but saw most of it.

Neat. A surprising number of American cars on display, too, besides the parade lap cars. I would have loved to seen all that (and the race!). Gary
