Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. An estimated 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide) have CF. In people with CF, a defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that: Clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. Obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down food and absorb vital nutrients. In the 1950s, few children with CF lived to attend elementary school. Since then, tremendous progress in understanding and treating CF has led to dramatic improvements in the length and quality of life for those with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond. I would like to thank everyone personally who showed their support for this great cause. I am a 56 year old Cystic Fibrosis survivor and have an older brother who also has it that is just shy of 58 now. I have watched many young children and young adults never make it. I will keep Slodat's little 4 year old cousin in my prayers. It is a tough disease and a lifetime of struggles. Thank you all so much

I'am really proud of you guys for doing this. My daughter Andrea had cystic fibrosis and in 2001 I donated her my left lung, her boyfriend donated the right. She contracted aspergillis "a lung infection" and died 30 days later in the hospital at age 17. I'm only telling you this, because I know first hand how difficult this disease is on families.
