Got some new shoes for the '54 and I'm trying to remove the blue protective coating from the raised white letters. What a hassle! Simple Green and a scrub brush didn't phase it. Resorted to wet sanding with 320g and that kinda worked but there must be a simpler way. Any tips?

I used White wall tire cleaner back in the day and it always seemed to work excellent but as most things I don't know if the old stuff had any "bad" chemicals in it that it doesn't have in the new stuff that actually worked....

Simple green and 400 wet/dry sand paper on a paint stick. And you will likely need to repeat the process every spring when the letters turn brown.

Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner works good on tires.

Westley's Bleach White and a synthetic bristle brush.
Spray it on - let it sit for a few minutes to soak in, them spray it again to keep it wet and use the brush.
Power rinse - should come off.

Don’t laugh. This stuff is cheap and I’ve seen it do miracles.

When I worked at Sears decades ago, we used a liquid soap & a stiff bristled brush, n they scrubbed clean. Maybe the composition of everything has changed... idk.

White letters belong on jacked up 4x4 trucks turn the ugly things to the inside. That's where they are on the back tires on my 48,.
The local tire store pressure washes the tires when they install them and blows that blue stuff off.

I remember when raised white lettering on tires was the rage in my high school parking lot…45 years ago.
I’m in the Comet and bristle brush crowd if they have white letters on both sides

Sorry, but I hate White Lettered Tires...I'd be taking a black Testors Paint Pen and make those letters disappear.

They still make that? Used to used that all the time detailing cars in college at a used car lot in Worcester for drinking money! Fog some flat black on them and put them on the inside. :)

Check with a tire shop that deals with them; Discount tire still offers them.

I agree with turning the letters to the inside but if you insist on making them visible use Comet, of course I am fond of the brand. ( see Avatar)

Yup, tires are made differently now. they do not recommend using anything with bleach or lye in it. I am going through a brown whitewall thing on my Corvette, as @MCjim stated above talk to the tire store or mfg before you use anything on it

Having mounted thousands of white letter tires, the best thing I've found to get the blue off is a HOT water pressure washer and a stiff brush. Soaps of any kind never made much of a difference IMO.

  21. I love how a guy asked a simple question and all of the resident “experts” tell him their opinion. I like white letters and have them out on my Fargo which I actually drive, luckily I don’t give a fuck about the “experts”

as far as the question, hot water and scrubbing took the blue off on mine!

Drive the tires and wheels around for about 10 minutes.
Come home, spray down with purple power, and grab the wife's Magic Eraser, and boom the junk comes off super fast.

Yep, exactly. Pretty much the look I'm going for! I have fond memories of my high school days. Don't we all?

That sounds plausable. I have Purple Power in my parts cleaner and I have a Magic Eraser buried somewhere in my toolbox!

I'm with you, Petejoe, ...got it at the former Dollar Store(s), all I had at the time to use so decided to give it
a try...it works great on all sorts of stuff. Never would have believed it.

I have the tire shop that mounted them remove the blue before I take them home.
