When I graduated from high school I went to work in a body shop. I did this full time until I went to trade school to become a machinist. As far as autobody work and my experience, I never developed the talent of being able "to see it with my hands". Well over 50 years later I'm still the same with bodywork, but show me what you need machined using different types of metals, aluminum, plastics, etc. and I can "see it in my mind before I even start!" I have a buddy that has nicknamed me "the problem solver". 60 Special

In return for pizza, my son and five of his friends hoisted the body onto the chassis.

 

In the old days that body webbing was brake lining.

So those guys are ''body'' builders. Good to have help.

 

Glad to see these young fellows helping out and doing something cool, like putting a bad ass hot rod together. We need more pictures of the body on Gary.

 

@Just Gary , I'm happy you got your son and his buddies to help with the body, but this picture doesn't suffice. Roll the damn thang outside and take some more pics [please].

The front axle is still at the chrome shop, so the front end rolls around on dollys & cribbing.

CHROME!

I'd already ground and sanded the front axle and rear bumper to #400 to reduce chrome shop labor costs.


Wayne's Auto Parts in Fredericksburg, VA, finished sanding, then triple (copper, nickel, chrome) plated them both.

Excellent quality and very reasonable price. I'd definitely trust them with future work.

The twelve-week turnaround (Wayne had predicted 8-10) was a minor inconvenience but I pressed ahead with other tasks while waiting.

BTW, that's a '33-36 Ford axle dropped by @jackandeuces

 

That is nice work, Gary. Very nice. Triple plating these days is a real bonus. I know that some platers are skipping the copper stage because of the expense of the copper. You should be well pleased with that.
