  2. '39 converts had the wipers under the windshield. From the perspective of the photo, it appears that the top doesn't go as far back on the body as a '40 convertible does, so I would lean towards a '39 convertible with '40 deluxe hood, grille, and it looks like it's got ribbed trim, which would be '40, too.

Both 39 and 40 convertibles had the windshield wipers at the base of the windshield. Sorry no prize :)

What a crazy mixed up world we live in !! No vent window frames and the length of the top says 1939 to me , which means it is probably a 40:). I can't tell about the door handles which were also quite different . As stated earlier, with George's deep pockets it could be either.

Probably a 40.... ? Now that you mention it I now see there are no vent windows, that is an indication the body is a 39 while he trim and front sheet metal are 40. I have the same problem when people see my 39 which has a 40 standard grill and 40 dash. Most people call it a 40. I don't get all flustered about it I just say no it is a 39 with lots of 40 parts on it.

I really like Poteet's 39 BTW. Having said that I hope to install the cheery 39 Deluxe grill , hood, trim and dash in my 39 just because I like em that way.

Not a 40 I promise you. No 40 converts had the short 39 top. I don't think there is any question that it is a 39 body with 40 deluxe hood and grill. Just find it odd that as much coverage his cars get I have never seen this one covered.

  9. ...................Good point for sure. His builds usually get big-time magazine exposure. We await further details and analysis.:D

The whole Poteet 39 thing was fun yesterday. I did some internet searching and found no sign of the subject convertible. Anyone watching this thread know Mr. Poteet? If you do please ask him about this car and post up what you find out.

  11. So I did a little research yesterday and looked in a Ford book that I have. Now granted, I have found errors in this book so I don't consider it "Gospel" when it comes to early Fords.

I found it interesting that in 1937 and 1938 according to this book you could get a 2 passenger convertible, as well as a 5 passenger with a back seat. The cosmetic difference was the longer top to go around the back seat. In 1939, only the 2 seat convertible was available and in 1940 the 5 seater with the backseat was the only one available. Seems like Ford was experimenting to see what the public wanted.

  12. ................Seems like Henry was trying to cover all aspects of the market in the Thirties. There were Coupes and Sedans obviously, but also various convertible configurations as mentioned along with Victorias, B-400s, Roadsters, Cabriolets, Sport Coupes, small trucks, big trucks, wagons and probably more that I missed............and most of these in Standard or DeLuxe versions!.:D:eek:

  13. Oh yeah..........Phaetons as well!!:)

  15. The book I have said that they made a limited number of Phaetons in 1938. I always thought the last year for the roadster/open car with no roll up windows was 37. The book didn't say anything about a 38 Roadster.

Well we are a little off topic here but I can't help myself.... It is some good history that brought us to our favorite and subject of this thread the 40 Ford, so it doesn't hurt to to study up a bit.
    My source shows the following.
    1937 Roadster 2/4P 1250 made @t $719.00
    1937 Phaeton 5 P 3723 made @ $749.00
    1937 Convertible Sedan 5 P 4378 made @ 859.00
    1937 Club Cabriolet 4P 8,001 made @ $759.00
    1937 Cabriolet 2/4P 10,148 made @ $719.00

    1938 Deluxe Phaeton 5 P 1,169 made @ $820.00
    1938 DLX Convertible Coupe 2/4P 4702 made @ $770.00
    1938 DLX Convertible Club Coupe 4P 6080 made @ 800.00
    1938 DLX Convertible Sedan 5P 2743 made @ $900.00

    1939 DLX Convertible Coupe 4 P 10,422 made @ $790.00
    1939 DLX Convertible Sedan 5P 3,561 made @$ 920.00

    1940 DLX Convertible Coupe 4 p 23,704 Mad$825.00

You can see the trends through the years as the roadster/phaeton models slipped in popularity and the convertible sedans were just not popular enough at the prices asked. It looks like they made the right decisions as they sold quote a few 40 Convertible coupes. Good for us anyway :).

I also believe the 1939 convertible was 4P due to a rumble seat. The body would be a Murrey
1939 was also the last year Ford outsourced any body manufacturing. Starting in 1940 all bodies were made in house.

  22. From Saturday, while I was out fartin' around in the stake truck.

    20170218_134922.jpg
This was after a temporary breakdown when the crab style distributor cap decided to come off and broke the rotor. Hitched a ride back to the house, grabbed the stock divers helmet distributor. Thirty minutes later, swapped distributors and plug wires and back in bid'ness!

  23. Looks like a 36 coupe with 40 front clip, cool!

My old folkstone 40 std pictured above--lives in L.A, now. Time to start another one. Wife found this one at a swap meet as a roller-talked me into buying it. IMG_7292.jpg

  27. The weather has been so nice here in Maryland that the wife and I took a little road trip up to Havre de Grace yesterday to do some antique hunting and grab some dinner!
