  1. Ha Ha! That's me in the back seat of my Dad's 59 Buick, looking up "Fairwell Gap" in Mineral King. 1969 I imagine.

    Trivia time.
The shot of those guys working on the red Chevy11, what's wrong with this picture?
Not relating to the scary working arrangement, but the car itself.
Please no cards and letters about it being 2 full years OT.

Yes sir, it is. Norma Jean married the sailor (Merchant Marine), James Dougherty in 1942, when she was 16. The marriage lasted until 1946. Dougherty was married a couple times after that and passed away in 2005 at age 84. He was a retired LAPD detective

Maybe it's not an SS even though it has a grille badge claiming so.

    And speaking of the LAPD...
    lapd.jpg
L.A. finest, back in the day. There were no police radios in those days, once the police car was out on duty, there was no way to contact them unless they called in on a land line for messages.

    downtown.jpg
There was a time in downtown Los Angeles when there were no traffic signals at intersections.

    farmersmkt.jpg
The Farmers Market at the intersection of 3rd St. and Fairfax Ave. in the 1940's. You would not recognize it today. In the background was one of L.A.'s professional baseball park, home of the "Hollywood Stars". And to the left is Gilmore Stadium where they held football games and midget races. I attended both at various times in my youth.
    gilmore.jpg
A better view of the stadium. You can see the dirt midget track around the field. Before the NFL was in existence, they had some "professional" teams show up to play games (note the Detroit Lions sign).

    oilwell.jpg
Anyone that grew up in L.A. remembers this oil well in the middle of La Cienega Blvd near the Beverly Blvd. intersection near Hollywood. This is looking north toward the Hollywood Hills on a smoggy day.

    Note the window post.

  18. Actually, there were police car radios in the early '30s.

The Hollywood Bowl before the large bandstand dome was built.
    hollywoodland.jpg
The original "Hollywood sign" was "Hollywoodland", the name of a subdivision real estate company.

    knotts.jpg
From a single acorn, a tree will grow. This little "pie stand" in Buena Park became Knott's Berry Farm.

    tunnels.jpg
Figueroa St. eventually became part of the Pasadena Freeway. The northbound lanes still use these tunnels.

    hollyvine.jpg
Hollywood and Vine, looking south on Vine St. toward the Brown Derby restaurant. How many of us old timers remember these signals? I know I do. Red and green only, no yellow lights.
    whiskey.jpg
Sunset Blvd. in the '60's. When I first started going to the Whiskey A Go Go, "The Doors" were the house band. At night, there would be a line of people around the block waiting to get in...

George we used to go to the Whiskey and see Johnny Rivers, just setting at the bar having a drink

Then on the way home stop at the Crossbow in Van Nuys and have a nitecap seeing Glen Campbell

Boy those were great days, never knew we had it so good

And I do remember those red & green lights
