Technical Engine trouble

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rex Jolles, Apr 28, 2021.

  1. Now that I think of it, I think the only issue in the first place was it ran out of gas until I fucked with it

  2. If it's an 8BA flathead, it's probably the dist. plate not advancing and returning. Take the cap off and suck on the vaccuum line to see if it moves and returns, also check the wires in it, the points should be 017 wide open and change the point condenser, sometimes they get bad when warmed up by engine heat.

  3. I replaced the condenser 2 times already haha. But yeah I'm gonna check the points

  4. Check the vaccuum too. There's a guy that adapts SBC chevy dist for Fathead Fords, they are a much better way to go.

  5. Vaccum's good. It started today but didn't idle, I'll worry about it tomorrow haha

Careful diagnosis is your friend. There's a YT channel ViceGrip Garage where Derek buys cars that have sat for years, goes to wherever they are, gets them running and drives them home. He always starts with diagnostics. And bypassing the fuel system running fresh gas directly to the carb. Fuel supply systems that have sat are trouble with a capital T, they'll plug your carb and make for all kinds of trouble.
Call the carb guy, outstanding offer, you will learn a lot.

  7. Oh yeah I've followed vice grips for a while. I'll keep the carb guy in mind, thanks

  8. Alright I finally figured out the issue, for real this time. vacuum leak on the carb. A piece of old gasket was stuck in there and air got out. Took the carb apart and cleaned it up, put some grease on the gaskets for good measure and it's fine. Readjusted the idle and fuel mixture and it's as good as it ever was. Took it for a spin with my dad around the block, small issue with acceleration but she'll be right

Those spark plugs were black as coal though, a vacuum leak won't do that...

Remember the cosmonaut in the movie Armageddon? He said Russians just start smacking it with a big wrench, fixes it every time.

  12. Yeah the carb was also adjusted horribly wrong among other things

  13. Also it might need piston rings but I really hope not because taking the engine apart is not something I wanna do because I guarantee it's going back together wrong

From the spark plug pic posted, at least on a phone that looks like fuel, not oil. Kinda fluffy black deposits. Excess fuel will make it into the crankcase oil, and also eventually wash out rings. Tune it up! Make sure it's a good, hot ignition spark under all conditions, and see that the ignition timing advance numbers are straight all the way from idle to wide open and everything in between.

Then set the carb up more carefully, check and/or adjust fuel pump pressure, float height, jetting and power circuit. With modern gasoline spark plugs will normally burn very clean. Keep in mind, it doesn't need a hotter plug, it needs the right fuel curve and ignition.
