Painted the body on my 38 Ford cabriolet many moons ago. Put a gallon of paint away to finish the four fenders. Finally decided it was time t0 finish he car. Opened the can and found a gallon of jello. Old Dupont paint
Went to the local paint supplier where I had the original paint mixed and was told one of the mixing toners was no longer available. Original color is 98 Honda San Marino red. The original paint was a combination of violet, weak white, weak black, and clear. The violet is no longer available. I have spent much time and funds trying to duplicate the color with no success. Had several paint suppliers use their paint light to determine the toners to produce the desired results with no success. I am at the point that I am considering to paint the four fenders a darker color such as a 75 BMW color called Malage Red. Any suggestions.

Sounds like a match isn't going to happen. :(
I assume that you aren't interested in redoing the whole body. :(
I'd consider something 'off' enough so that it didn't look like it was a failed single color attempt. Tough with the smooth look of your avatar pic.
You are the one who is going to have to live with the choice, so it's up to you.

Dunno but I’d be tempted to put 2/3 paint and 1/3 thinner in a pint can and give it a good dose of the paint shaker and see what happens

You aren't going to revive that can of paint, I would consider painting the fenders black or a color that will contrast with the Honda paint enough to look like it was planned that way from the get go!

Have you tried the paint color scanner that your paint jobber should have? You can bring them a part you have already painted and they scan it and come up with a formula for it, most of the time it works good. It might come up with a color formula for a different auto manufacturer altogether but it’s about the color.

Funny :) the man I apprenticed for would mix paint using an assortment of colors and tones and the mark one eyeball , rarely missed, no books or codes , just long experience

Probably your best option. I suggest getting a few different cards sprayed of color options. A two tone fat fendered car can be a big hit or a big miss depending...IMO
I do like the contrasting darker red to a well over done black though.

I've run in to this before when my body shop was still open...red is the worst...I would just scuff and re shoot the whole car, you can get it close enough to not have to do the jambs... even if you were to find the same paint that was used it won't match...and even if you were to revive the paint you have it won't ever match...

ford used to cut the curtains off the parts they dipped and put them back in the paint barrel.... paint is solids and thinner...I'd use a potato masher and like you said...also once you get it to thin a little... drill a hole in the lid big enough to put a paint mixer on a drill and mix it good...there should be a skin on the top... but again... the color solids will separate and some might be just at the top... I ve seen red paint on cars where they painted the cab.... then later painted the fenders out of the same can not match... so again... if it's gonna be a nice car... re paint the whole thing, the same day .. the same gun @ the same temp. reds with different toners will settle in the can, so if not constant mixed will not match when it dries...air pressure and different guns will make it be a tone off when dry...

Any paint today would be a "blendable match". Even with a scan gun. I vote for a repaint of the body. Hopefully you have a close color, so you do not have to redo the jams. But even if you do have to do them it is only a scuff and shoot.

Check with a different mainstream supplier like PPG or SW. They may still support that color with their toner line up. Although " red " toners usually fade/shift the fastest.

That paint code is r94. Any body shop with a mixing station can make you that color. Your local paint supplier should be able make it with modern toners, and they can tint it to an exact match if you have something they can use to match it with.

Florescent lighting fade it even quicker than natural light...and paint matched might look good in the garage ...and trick your eye to think it match's... till you take a pic and see it's off... just paint the hole car....and be sure it matches....you're really not saving much...... but like they say, never enough to do it right... but always enough to do it over.

need to prep it and put a good sealer so that all the pieces have the same color before you spray the red... red will tone different on a different color base..
would be easy to base coat and clear the whole car and have a show quality paint job... or easy off the paint thats on it and have paintless tina...uglier the better for the new crowd...I was overly surprised at the amount of people that thought theses cars looked good..

Here is the formula for 1 quart in lucid, genrock. Nothing fancy, should be an easy code for any paint store. IMG_3056.jpeg

  18. Single stage or base clear?
Had an old color scammed recently and they did a good job.
    Can’t match sun exposure
Color shouldn’t be a big deal.

I know on some Honda colors they change mid year because of the batches that are used. Your jobber should know if this is the case because the paint code will ask for a production date for the variance. I ran across this many times when working in my buddies body shop helping him out in the evenings and weekends

Yes, that is the car. Hood and side panels are painted with original red. They were done right after this picture was taken. I had to see what the car looked like all together before I went any further. I was never really in love with the car, but it has grown on me. Was going to make it a 37 but have now changed my mind and will keep it as a 38 because you just don't see many 38s.

Another option would be scuff the painted part of the car and shoot the whole thing with the new paint, it’ll all match then.

    That is a good looking 37. Now I remember why I like a 37.
