Technical do vac secondary carbs work on tunnelram?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by turboroadster, Dec 28, 2016.

  1. Heres my dumb question of the day
I'm guessing the extra plenium volume affects quality or amount of vacuum?
I mean, if I was to pull a vacuum on a small tank compared to a larger tank, the small one would pull quicker, so does that mean vac secondary carbs would not perform properly ?
I have a warmed over 327, double humps, cammed, blah blah blah, want to use twin holley 1850/600cfm carbs because I have them. Will they work on the tunnelram or does it even matter, assuming the motor is built/cammed correctly and is able to produce decent vacuum.
I also have a set of edelbrock 600 cfm carbs also and can run them if the vac sec holley carbs are a tunnelram nono.

how does the air valve in the secondary side of the Edelbrock carbs work, in the same situation?

Don't see any reason that they wouldn't.

What squirrel is saying is that they're both vac sec. carbs , they just go about it in a different way ...in answer to your ? , they'll work fine...

Yes Holley vac. secondary carbs will work on a tunnel ram. 50cc pump shot and power valves 50 -60% of idle vacuum.

The secondary operation does not care how much manifold vacuum the engine pulls, it is venturi vacuum that opens the secondaries. You can tune the operation with different strength springs on the diaphragm.

That's the ticket right there. Without the big pump shot you will have a huge bog when you punch it.

Not going to start a pissing contest here, but you don't need the big pump shot to cover up a bog unless you screw with the opening rate of the secondaries. With proper tuning, the secondaries will open as needed and not require an additional shot of fuel.

And you have twice the volume of single carb to start with - 60 cc vs. 30 cc. Different acc pump cams deliver different amounts and rates of fuel too.......... but I'd still try 31 squirters to start with.

BTW, if you install the 50cc housing and don't change to a matching pump cam you get the same pump shot as a 30cc housing. Volume is based on pump stroke, not total capacity.

You want a cam that gives a good shot early in its motion, the green #290's are a good choice.

If you're wanting all the shot you can get right off idle, I think the blue 427 gives the biggest shot quickest of the 30cc cams.

I'm setting up my drag racing carbs (30 cc pumps) with a pink cam on both ends this time. I think they will have the largest shot in the area I'm going to use them in. I guess we'll see.

The blue is quick, but light on total volume, I use blues on my truck, but it's a single four and it's a double pumper. Same amount of pump feeding about half the plenum. I think you will need more volume with the tunnel ram.The pink 330 gives the most total volume, but is lazy off the base circle. The green is a good compromise, it gives 10cc more total volume than the blue, and about .010 faster for the same degree of throttle opening than the blue through the first 20 degrees of throttle rotation. Then the blue passes it in the middle , but doesn't have as much total lift as the green. Pinks are a good cam to use with a stick or trans brake drag race application, where you are staging with the motor up. They give the biggest shot of the 30cc pumps, but they give it late. If you use pinks, take an extra pump diaphragm and cut the centre out and use it as a spacer, they will actually bottom a stock 30 cc pump before they use up all their lift. With the spacer, they will actually give 37.5 cc per stroke. It's just an educated guess, but greens would be my baseline with the tunnel ram.

Ps: I use the blues on my truck instead of the greens because with the 4000 stall converter and smashing it from an idle, they give more shot than the greens right where the converter hits, if that makes sense. With the loose converter, I don't really need as much shot right off idle, but the pinks are just a little TOO lazy initially, part throttle driveability on the street suffered a bit.
