My wife really likes The Oregon Coast. We are there often. I had never taken an old car before. Not for any real reason necessarily, I just never did. The beach is kind of her deal. I am accommodating, but I don't love it the way she does, kind of the way she is with my hot rod stuff, and it just seemed like for some reason those two worlds always stayed separate.

Well, last week, she was anxious to go to the beach. I was anxious to put some miles on my Coupe after some repairs and with beautiful weather in the forecast. So, we compromised and took a hot rod to the beach.

We hammered several hundred miles onto that thing, dog included, and I've never enjoyed The Oregon Coast more. We went all over the place. My dog and I even managed to get a little fishing (and stick throwing) in at a nearby lake for good measure.

My car is filthy, full of sand, dog nose prints on my windshield and muddy paw prints on my seat. I couldn't care less and I can tell you this, I won't be going to the beach again without an old car.

Just a reminder that everything is better in a hot rod.

Jake, looks like a nice day at the beach, it’s funny, I am 55 miles from the ocean, and I haven’t been there for a dozen years. I need to get out more. Great car and dog !

  13. I know what you mean. Dog's the best co-piolet, Wife can come along also if she wants. I've heard many "you let the dog in on all that White upholstery?". Hay it's vinal and cleans right up. Yep, nose prints everywhere. It's just a Car and built for my enjoyment.

Thank You, ironandsteele, for sharing your pleasure here.
You have created a very tasteful coupe.
    Mine isn't done yet.
Tho, My driver always needs the windows wiped of nose prints.

Living the good life right there!

Not sure about 'everything' being better in a hotrod though. Sex for instance, but it might be!

Love the black soot on the bumper, there's a car that is driven.

Great post. Love the car, my immediate thought was that I like the bumpers on that thing. I found myself looking at the pics several times over and realized that the bumpers were pulling me in, just something different on a 32. Then, I found your blog about the "most expensive bumpers" and had a good laugh about both of us.

  18. Those Oregon coastal roads that we're spoiled with were meant for an old car. It doesn't get any better than that!

  19. My wife and I joined another couple in Wisc. and drove our 56 and 57 Nomad 1903 miles through the Badlands and then Wall Drugs, then Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer's park and then Deadwood. Both cars just cruised and every stop we would have an extra 15 minutes talking to people. Great times for the four of us!

My wife and I were at Lincoln City last weekend. We used to have a home there and go quite often. Highway 18 is in dire need of re-paving in spots. Typical Oregon landfalls from too much rain have erased sections or sunk them dramatically. Hitting them at speed in my wife's daily was terrifying (riding with her requires sedatives), I would have not liked it in my hot rods. Your trip looks like fun! It's better at the beach! Other than my golf game that day.
The Chinook Winds Casino has a car show during the summer, you may have convinced me to drive down for that!

    Awesome post!
I sent this thread to my wife. We seriously plan on driving around the country when I retire in our old cars. Been looking foreward to it for years. My kids are grown and having grandkids now, so what a way to visit! You’re my hero for today. :)
One of the reasons I don’t mind my cars being rough around the edges-we’re supposed to have fun doing this, correct?

That's Piper, she's a really great dog and goes everywhere with me.

Thanks Marty! Try it in an old car, you may find you like it a lot better than you remember!

    100%

    That's funny.

Nomad, eh? Now you're speaking my language. After chasing this car for about a decade, I'm about to turn it into my daily driver:

You can read the story of that car in an article I wrote, here: No-Dice Nomad - Barn Find - 1956 Chevy Nomad – ironandsteele

    Agree!

Thank you. It has a healthy H&H flathead in it, '39 trans, etc.

I’ve never seen the Pacific Ocean, but when I do, I want to be in an old hot rod.
Another thing for my bucket list!
