Technical V belt rubs P/S install ‘63 Impala

You should be running a narrower belt. All of these '60's and '70's motors used the 13 series belts. Most belts you get now a days are the 15's . The belt should be flush with the top of the groove on the pulley. It might not be your problem, but that's the way it is today. Post the brand and the number of the belt you have on there now.

 

With that particular bracket there isn't much room to move the alternator in a lot. Maybe enough to get the belt on. With no AC it should take a Gates 7565 that is 56.5 on the inside and 57.31 around the outside.

 

Kinda going far afield.

The alternator bracket is stock for a '63 Chev. '65 Chev use a different exhaust manifold and bracket; but still put the alternator in the same position. '63 & '65 use the same short pump and pulley.

The same alternator, water pump, and inner crank pulley have been on there and working for the OP; but haven't seen a straight enough on picture to judge the pulley alignment.

Seems the trouble started with the addition of the aftermarket PS pump bracket.

We retrofitted a '62 with an alternator on a stock GM '63-'64 bracket along with a PS pump on stock GM pre '65 brackets. All fit together. Been on the road for years with no grief.

Still think something could be fishy with the aftermarket PS bracket .

 

The frustrating thing is

I tried pre 61 ps bracket and that didn’t line up the pulley but the alt fan was fine. Then I went with a universal bracket that lined up the PS pulley but the alt fan belt would rub the bolt. I went with the repop 63 brackets you see now .

 

Okay, speaking as a Shop Owner and a pretty danm good fabricator and being told everything is Right but it still don't fly it would be time for me to move on. We have already wasted Days waiting on parts and Hours of free labor shifting stuff around and it's time for it to get out of the Shop. Can't leave until it works so my solution is to build a factory looking spacer and raise the Alt vertically strait up till the dang Belt clears and close the hood. You're not building a Concourse car, you just wanted Power Steering. That would be Job Completed. Time to get back to making $$$$.

 

Can’t help but wonder why your pump won’t swing further to the right when facing the engine like this example…

Speaking of different mounting for the Alt. I bet I could bolt this on and be done. I'd probably change it's rotation but you get the idea.
