I have searched but have not found the answers. I am looking a 1929 Ford hot rod, but have not went to see it yet. Here are my questions: What should the vin number look like? The guy says it titled from the vin tag? This leads to question numbers two. The vin number is on the frame in by the steering box, right?
Left hand side framerail, about where drivers door would be? Mine starts with a star then A ###### Star. Make sense? EDIT http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67118
They were titled by the motor number and it was then stamped into the frame.... If the body is on the frame it has to be unbolted and lifted up to see the number...
The VIN tag on a Model A is not a problem IF it was installed by a state DMV. When I registered my Model A in the seventies the California DMV refused to use the engine number and riveted a VIN tag to the door jam. They were originally titled by the engine number and then states started wanting to see the number stamped into the frame. This is the number assigned to the original engine and was stamped into the frame on the assembly line on top of the left frame rail under the cowl. The number stamped into the frame cannot be seen without lifting the body. Charlie Stephens
Find out what your state requirements are. I brought a model A from Ohio to Michigan and I had to have the vin verified by a police officer. The car still had the four cyclinder engine and the number matched the title. No problems. I sold the car in Michigan and never did look at he frame number.
And could be like what I started with. No engine/powertrain. No suspension. Questions of how much rust damage has been done to the framerails. Rust pits deep enough to have removed any stampings from Henry's men. Might be a challenge like it was for me.
My VIN number was verified by the tag agency before they would transfer the title to my name and the number on the engine was good enough for them.
